CPU idle Temps are way too high

My cpu (i7 4790k) is showing idle temps between 44-55 degrees Celsius.

Whenever I play a steam game my computer will freeze within 10 minutes, I'll get a blue screen with "WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR" and my pc will reset.

The only thing I have recently changed was my motherboard, I purchased a MAXIMUS VI EXTREME motherboard and swapped everything over.

At first I thought it was an issue with the thermal paste. So I reapplied the thermal paste, nothing changed. I reapplied it again with a different method. Nothing again.

I have even gone as far as to purchase a new stock heatsink (exactly like the one I had before) with the paste pre-applied and tried it. Nothing...The temps are still 45-55C while IDLE!

What else could be causing this??

Depending upon room temp, the CPU core temp at idle should be more like 32*C. to 38*C. Something is clearly wrong.

I would initially be concerned about inadequate contact between the surfaces of the cooler and CPU. Are you absolutely certain that all 4 of the push pins on the cooler are all the way through the holes in the mobo and that the barbs on the ends have latched to the underside of the mobo?

Can you wiggle the cooler or pull it up/down?

Is the cooler fan plugged into the CPU_FAN header on the mobo, and not a chassis fan header?

The cooler far is plugged into the CPU_FAN header.

I have made 100% sure that the cooler has all 4 pins all the way in.

I will go ahead and triple check for the hell of it and get back you.

just checked it again. the cooler is not loose in any way. the four pins are completely in, and im sitting at 50C right now idle, I have the case open and it doesnt even feel remotely hot in there.

Do you have a utility to monitor fan speed installed? Like Asus AISuite or HWInfo64?

I'm sorry, but I'm out of ideas. Maybe someone else can chime in here, or you could try contacting Asus Tech Support.

Just thought of something else: Take the side cover off the case and run it w/o the cover. See if that helps.
