The CPU does really matter. If you have a really good GPU but a bad CPU, something called a 'bottleneck' will happen. What this means is that the GPU can't work as good as it fully can as it needs the CPU too be at a similar level to be able to make the GPU run well.

Yes, it depends on the game. While the GPU is generally more important. The CPU and RAM must meet minimal requirements. A Core i5 6500 is preferable a Core i3 6100 is at least minimal.

In your case. Your motherboard will require a 2nd or 3rd Generation Core i series. I would recommend picking up a used Core i7-2600/2600K/3770/3770K. Any of those will make for a huge upgrade and are more than enough to play modern games. If your motherboard is a Z68 or Z77 chipset. Definitely pick one of the two K series for overclocking. Without overclocking support they are only a slight upgrade over the non K series models.

Given the age there is no reason to buy a new one. At a wildly inflated price. CPUs have an extremely low failure rate. Way under 1% per year. If it works when you buy it odds are very high it will keep working long after it is useless due to obsolescence. Just buy from an eBay seller with a good feedback rating.

Note if you want to save some money you can also look at equivalent XEON models. If your motherboard does not allow overclocking. There is no reason not to. Intel Xeon E3-1240/1245/1270/1275/1280/1290. Make sure they are not V2, V3, &c. Only the original Sandy Bridge LGA 1155 models.

i know getting a new Cpu would be a good idea tho, but i'll stick with this one for a while since it's showing really nice 1080p with the 1050, thanks in advance.
