this is my first time installing a cpu. i had placed my cpu in the socket and was pulling down the latch. it was very hard to pull down and when i got near the bottom it broke and the cpu sort of came out of place (probably broke some pins). now the latch is just loose. would i need to buy a new mobo or is this fixable?

edit: i probably didn't have the cpu socketed properly.

Solution
If no bent pins, my idea is to try using the CPU without a latch, since the heatsink of the CPU cooler will hold the CPU in place.
its an i7, i haven't inspected the actual pins on the board but im concerned about the latch which holds the cpu in place - is it worth trying to fix or would it be better to just buy a new mobo?

Good chance you destroyed some pins in the cpu socket itself. If that is the case your motherboard is more than likely non functional.
