About 2 or 3 Xmas's ago I bought my son (10 at the time) a discount PC. It was an eMachines EL1352G.

As my son's tastes changed in the first year, the PC quickly proved insufficient to play any of the games he became interested in. Rather than buy another PC, I decided to upgrade parts. I bought a new mid-tower case ($40), a new power supply (500w I think?) and a GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics card. I also brought the RAM up to 8GB. After moving everything from the mini-case to the new mid-tower case, everything has worked pretty well for about two years. Well now he has moved on to more demanding games and the original CPU (Athlon II X2 220) doesn't meet the games minimum specs. I am eyeing a used "Phenom II X6 1045T 2.70 GHz". This CPU is not specifically mentioned in the motherboard specs, http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/motherboard-3d-da061l-mb-specs/, but it is the right socket (AM3) and TDP 95w. This should work in my existing MB right? I'm trying to avoid a new MB as I don't want to have to do a clean install of Windows. Anyone see any problems with this?

Solution
It is pretty much absolute. The electronics is just not there for supporting the better CPU's. I bet that model board came out before the 6-core and much less the 4-core Black edition Phenom CPU's were even out.
Thanks for your reply. So, are you saying that compatible CPUs are limited to those that are specifically listed in the MB documentation? I was hoping that if it is the correct socket and within the TDP parameter, that it would work. Is that just wishful thinking? If it absolutely will not work, then I guess I'll look into a new MB/CPU combo that will be much more capable, yet it also probably means a complete reinstall of Windows. I was really trying to avoid the operating system reinstall.
