Howdy, folks!

I built my rig in 2012 and she's due for an upgrade! With this upgrade, my goal is to be able to stream semi-high demanding games (Overwatch, PUBG, NOT on highest settings) at a minimum of 720p 60fps as cheaply as possible.

I've always been an Intel fan, but I think I've settled on the Ryzen series unless someone has a compelling argument for the i5 8600(k). This is my current build. With that said, here is my main question:

Out of the box, would the R5 1600x work well for gaming + streaming, or would the R7 1700 have a substantial performance increase to justify the price? Are there any arguments for the I5 8600k? I am not planning on ever OC'ing the CPU, and will probably use software encoding for streaming as I understand it be be smoother than hardware encoding given my GPU.

A few other questions... What's a good, yet cheaper MOBO for the Ryzen CPU (again, don't plan on OC'ing). And, will the stock cooler suffice?

A side note - I am planning on adding a SSD on top of my current HDD. The PSU is 5 years old at this point. Will it continue to power everything or should I look into replacing that as well?

Or you can get 1600X + 3rd party cooler, no OCing needed. Or you get 1700 and get SSD in the future...
Used i7-2700K/2600K, OC to 4.4Ghz +, 16GB RAM+ and SSD(s). You're done for 720p@60FPS. My i7-2700K has zero issues putting 50FPS+ in every game while streaming at 720p, so I talk from experience. I don't think you could beat some ebay barn finds for those.

If you're set on "new", then the i5-8600K with some OC should be your best bet, although might be a tad pricier than what you're expecting. Since you want to do 720p, the i5 will give you the best gaming experience for a good while, so you can spend some of it for Streaming purposes with no problems. The 1700 is not a bad idea either, but doesn't OC (according to reviews) as well to justify it for someone willing to OC.

Now, whatever you choose, make sure you get plenty RAM. I recommend 16GB minimum for streaming. Buffering can take a toll on your PC if it hits paging.

Cheers!

Hey man, what is your budget on the upgrade? 1600X does not come with stock cooler, OCing is not as hard as you think. B350 MB is good enough for your purpose. The stock cooler comes with 1600 is good enough for OCing past 1600X. With new parts, I suggest getting a new PSU given it is 5 years old already :)

I'm actively avoiding OC'ing my CPU, so if you have any knowledge on which CPU would be the best for this application out of the box that would be super appreciated.

Also, with that i7 setup you mentioned, what GPU were you using? And were you doing software or hardware encoding?

I don't have a hard budget, just looking for whatever is the cheapest way of running the games while streaming at 720p 60fps smoothly. But I'm hoping to spend roughly $500 for CPU/MOBO/RAM and SSD. I'm also happy to wait for holiday sales this November/December on Newegg

I never do hardware encoding. It sacrifices too much compression and quality over speed. If you want to do streaming, you *will* have to do some reading on how to properly configure the broadcasting software you end up with. I recommend OBS myself, since it's great and offers a huge deal of customization options. Just keep in mind streaming sites have some restrictions on the encoder and a FPS cap.

If your budget is tight, then the R7-1700 (which ever with the bundled cooler) or go lower to the R5-1600 (whichever with a cooler) and a decent B350 MoBo will do you justice. Get as much RAM as you can get from the start: 16GB minimum.

Cheers!
