CPU only supports pcie 2.0

I have an i7 3820 and wanted to upgrade my gpu from a 960 4GB to a 1080. I was checking the specs on my cpu to know how many pcie lanes it supports for a second 1080. Intels website stated that my i7 only supports pcie 2.0, my mobo supports 3.0 but will this bottleneck a 1080.


Edit: I know pcie is backards compatible, I just want to know if I need to get a new cpu to utalize a 1080's performance.

It is my understanding that PCI-e 2.0 is sufficient for current graphics cards.

Thanks alot, Im planning on upgrading to kaby lake when it releases but do you have any idea of when new gpus will be bottlenecked by pcie 3.0?

I don't think anyone can answer that. Probably when resolutions go to 8K or above would be my guess.

You wont see any issues at all. It will work fine.
Here i am running GTX 960 on my Motherboard that only supports PCI-E 1.1 x16 and im not facing any issues.
