CPU or GPU Limited?

I have a AMD2100+ with 1GB PC2100 memory and a ATI9600Pro card. I play the game World War II On-Line and am not getting frame rates above about 25 and often about 15 or so. Am I CPU or GPU limited? How does one tell this sort of thing? Thanks!

The answer is both. The 9600Pro can be modded though to run all eight rendering pipelines faster. Try that before you get a faster CPU. You also could be short on memory, as I take it you're running PC2100. You'll have to give us more info.

I don't know this game much! Have you try comparing your results with other users results?

I just briefly check a review of the game complaining about the poor performance of the engine. And frankly, this games seems to not be "top-notch". It is probably not very well coded and this probably explain your "sluggish" performance.

Mostly that CPU and its weak 133 system clock is killing you and giving only a mem speed of 266.

What about your connection? You could be bandwidth or ping bottlenecked. Your system should be good enough to hold its own in most up to date games. But, I don’t know WWII so oh well.

What "other loads" are you running at the same time? Check in your start menu to see what is running, and unchek what you dont need.
Type "msconfig" in the run menu, then click start menu. You can safely unclick everything. You would have to manually start any prog you want running.
Dumping MSN messanger alone would probably double your framerates.

Duh, right you are! All you can do is try and raise it's speed. A 9800SE it ain't.

Don't play that game, but also try to overclock your CPU and what difference you get. That could indicate how CPU are you limited ...

Another option is to reduce display settings to see if you gain much FPS. If FPS are the same, you CPU is the bottleneck; the other way (significant FPS increase) means your GPU is acting as bottleneck.

My CPU is of a core that really won't OC. The display settings is an excellent idea as well as another post about turning of other background programs and see what happens. Thanks everyone.

A 2100+ is a good overclocker. If you want to run 166 FSB your board has to be able to go that high (n-force 2), and you must have DDR 333 memory. Athough, there are risks. I tried overclocking my 2400+, and when I changed the FSB from 133 to 166, my BIOS corrupted. Hopefully getting my board back in 2 or 3 days. What a hassle.

It is if you have a particular core. I can't remember what mine was off the top of my head but of course it's the one you can't OC! Dang!!
