my computer randomly started shutting off. i open the case and notice that the power supply fan would spin then stop. but i also notice that the bios wouldnt show hdd all the time. and when i booted it. it would say port 2 hdd failed. also when i turn the pc sometimes the power button would go from a blue light to a blinking yellow light like if it would be in sleep mode. my friend said that his mothboard had the same problem with not always seeing hdd so he believes it the mobo. thanks

That's usually indicative of catastrophic hdd failure, or at least imminent failure, although it's really a failure where data is checked between the send and receive. So the hdd sends out certain data, the drive checks to see if the cpu received the data uncorrupted. Most commonly its the hdd, but can also be bad cables, bad mobo ports, bad controller. Since port 2 showed the error, try switching ports, switch cables, test the hdd in your buddies pc using his cables etc. If you can eliminate the hdd as a cause, or even if you can eliminate the cables as a cause, that'll leave the mobo.
Cpus (barring user abuse such as unhealthy voltages during OC) are notoriously hard to damage or kill. There's just too many other circuits and components on the motherboard that are more fragile and in the power line before voltage or current gets a chance to affect the cpu. It's pretty much a given your issue is with the motherboard in some way.
