I have a 4th gen Core i5 4670k with a z97 asus hero motherboard that I would like to overclock. So, I look up linus tech tips video on how to overclock these cpus. I shut down my computer, change the core ratio to 40 and the voltage to adaptive mode. I then save and exit and voila, I have 3.41 ghz core clock. What am I doing wrong?

Solution
I'm not familiar with adaptive mode, but generally with overclocking you don't want auto settings. These can cause voltage drops and clock speed changes which results in instability and crashes. Your best bet is to set a static voltage (around 1.2v is acceptable for 4670k I believe, double check still), set your core multiplier to 40x, and base clock to 100mhz.
Also, what are you using to determine your clock speed? Task manager can often read wrong for overclocks.
EDIT: Are you using a software program to overclock, or going through your BIOS?
