Hi guys. I need your help. Sorry for my english.

I have a 8700k, 16gb ram 3200mhz, gtx 1070 strix.
The thing is, when I overclock my 8700k up to 4.7ghz (all cores) i dont notice any gain in gaming, i know that is a small oc, only 400mhz from stock, but i see other people that gain a lot of fps with that oc... i see a lot of youtube videos where people gain up to 15-20 fps with a 1080ti (depending the game ofc), yeah i know that my 1070 is not that powerful but i test with all settings in low, so i should be able to see any gain like in those videos, but no, i cant see nothing, i always get just the same fps. Before i had a 4790k, same thing...

Can you help me to understand what is going on, please?

Hi checha_5,

One thing important to understand is that if the CPU is not bottlenecking your GPU (generally GPU not at 100%), overclock the CPU will not give you a massive improvement.

The 8700k is already a beast, there's not "real" need to overclock it. People (like me and other enthousiast) who overclock it just want to squeeze any MHz possible for the visual pleasure and a kind of satisfaction.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, that is what I know. So, a 8700k bottleneck a 1080ti in ultra 1080p? Because in those videos people use 1080ti playing in ultra, even at 1440p they gain some fps, I don't think there is bottleneck with that hardware at 1440p ultra.
That's why I test with all settings in low with my 1070, to force more the CPU.

It's really weird, I'm so confused.

Exactly, in some games, at 1080p even in ultra, the 1080ti is too powerfull to let the CPU to render everyframe (paf! bottleneck)

At 1440p, it depends but overclocking the 8700k will bring you few improvement around 2-3% which means 4-5 FPS maximum!

With the 1070, you should be able to "create" a bottleneck setting everything in low as you said. enven in low, is it bottlenecking your CPU? Do you see 100% CPU usage on a least 1 core?

I did some tests, making my i7 like an i5 8600k (disabling hyperthreading and setting 4.1ghz all cores), and there i can see an improvement of 5-6 fps when i overclock to 4.7ghz, because ofc in that case there is a bottleneck. So i think i can understand better now, definitely i need a more powerfull gpu to see any gain with the 8700k oc, maybe with a 1080 i should be able. Well, ill stay with this cpu for long time i guess, so ill see later when i get a better gpu.
