Hey there, I've had my pc for 12 years, and it's been over heating recently. I've upgraded the processor, new psu, ( bought new card) removed hardware piece by piece and it's still overheating. I've only applied a rice grain size of arctic silver 5 to cpu, made sure heat sink is tight, but still no luck. Any idea what it could possibly might be? Is it just time for a new motherboard? I've checked the board for bossible shorts but haven't found anything too. If anyone has a theory, I could use the help! Thanks again!

Solution
Typically I believe most recommend about the size of a pea for thermal paste; by contrast a rice grain is probably insufficient for cooling purposes as it doesn't spread across the surface to help conduct heat away from the CPU to the cooler.

Basically, try applying a pea-sized blob of thermal paste to see if it helps improve your temperatures. (Make sure you clean the surfaces appropriately with isopropyl alcohol before doing so.)
