Evening ladies and gentlemen, I had a pc built a few years back on PC specialist and I have had no problems with until today. When I turned it on this evening, the post BIOS (I think?) stated that my cpu temperature was wrong and it beeped a few times. So obviously I was worried. I wanted to get on to check what was up but the darn thing shut itself down before I could do a Google search. So, i turned it on again and it shut down almost as soon as post bios popped up.
Unplugged everything, grounded myself, opened my comp up and the heatsink was very hot. Had a look at what the issue might be, saw that a fan was being covered on the outside by an external hard drive. Took it off, booted up again. Nope, got to desktop and it shut down. Opened her up again, thought it might be the immense amount of dust covering the fan on the inside of case (literally the only area with dust). Removed it and booted her up again.
Got to the desktop and of it went again. So I had a look online and there was a lot about thermal paste and it drying out. I cracked her open for one last look, popped the heat sink off and had a gander. The thermal paste looks very uneven and crispy.
So my question is, is it the thermal paste that needs replacing or could be something more sinister? Bearing in mind, like I said, no issues for 3/4 years with anything. It's a coolermaster heavy duty case with plenty of fans. I'd check temperatures if I had enough time to run a diagnostics haha
