CPU overheating during gaming

Hey all

I've been having this problem for ages. Since i bought my New ATI 4870 my CPU has been overheating up to 80 degrees during games like Modern Warfare 2 and Dirt 2 before i receive the alarm from dual core center to shutdown due to the CPU temp having reached 80 degrees... I have 3 chassis fans located on the left hand side of the case, one at the rear and one at the bottom front of the case.

I do have a spare GPU (Nvidia 9500GT) I have used before and this problem has not occured with that GPU whilst playing Modern Warfare 2 so I'm guessing the 4870 has something to do with the overheat.

Things I have tried to correct the problem:

Updated the Power Supply from an AKASA 500W to a Coolermaster 700W
Updated the heatsink from standard stock to a Zalman CNPS9500 LED heatsink/fan
Used Arctic Silver Thermal Compound

System Specs:

MSI K9A2VM-FD 780V Socket AM2+
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 Dual Core AM2 1MB 3.1GHz
Coolermaster 700W Power Supply
4 GB Geil RAM DDR2 800
XFX ATI 4870
X FI Xtreme Gamer
Soprano Thermal take Case

Can anyone help?

Hey, had the same problem, to lazy to write everything down.
Man alot of people have this problem... and everyone starts saying PSU, RAM, MOBO and change everything...
I sticked with it for 2 years too, long time...

All you have to do is replace your graphic card

PS: No cooling will help

That particular card doesn't exhaust any heat behind the case. It's a hot-running chip and that might be making your CPU overheat. If you can move fans to increase airflow from the front through the back of the case, that might help keep some of the hot air away from your CPU. You can also purchase an aftermarket graphics heatsink compatible with the 4870 that exhausts air from the case, that might help. You can also consider PCI slot fans--they fasten into any free expansion slots you have in your case and pull air out the back.

Damnit... XFX usually has the reputation of building top end hardware. Thanks for the reply. Do you know of any card that does exhaust heat out the back?
Buying a cooler for the card was going to be my next step...

@tortnotes: Well instead of babling around and saying it might be the PSU, the RAM, the Mobo and stuff, i just spit it out... Since its the same problem, the same problem will be fixed in the same way...

Anyway Chrissy, It's not XFX its the serries.. Even brands can make a mistake when producing some serries of graphic cards, in this case the 4870...

If i were you tho, i would get a Nvidia GTX260 or GTX275

hmm GTX260, GT275? kinda out of my budget. Besides ive only had this card for like 4 months and I'm kinda happy with the results its done. I'll stick with this one.. Would be a shame to set it aside...

Yeah thats how i got stuck with the problem for 2 years, lol, when you find the real solution to the problem, you don't do it, hehe
I found a side fix tho.
1. Turn on PC, Start the game
2. Monitor will shut down in 5-10 mins
3. Force Shut Down PC
4. Turn on PC, and without starting any other programs (like Messenger and stuff) directly start the Game
It shouldn't have the problem

Well that was for me, and it's not guaranteed

And i think you're wrong there with the prices, 4870 and GTX260 are really close in prices. Check it out? At least they are in my country. Those 4 months prices changed, hehe
Edit: wait 4870 512 MB? then GTX260 is a bit more expensive, but it's worth it

It doesn't say anything about being compatible with the 4870.
Your original post claims that the cpu is overheating, what size is the system exhaust fan ?
The CNPS9500 is a decent cooler but it likes to have a good exhaust fan to back it up.

The graphic card i already taking 2 slots already plus the sound card is right underneath.. If i fit those they would have to be at the bottom would that make a difference as my rear fan is located at the rear top

It's a good looking cooler,the problem is that it still doesn't exhaust the hot air.
Can you run ATI tool for a few minutes and monitor the card temps ?

Yea right now its running at 64 degrees with the fan working at 16% idle

Its usually within the first 5 minutes in which the PC is turned on
Goes up to about 80 degrees when under load last time i checked...

That's warm, but not excessive, with stock cooling reviews show them as high as the low 90's.

OK gonna try and help again.
Stop wasting your time testing stuff. Go replace your XFX 4870. I already saw another guy on this forum having problems with XFX 4890...

Small Summary: Sometimes brands can make mistakes when manufacturing some serries of Graphic cards, in this case the 48xx serries... The graphic card Overheats and no cooling will help, like I said previously... Its like internal bleeding and you cant fix it by running tests and clocking -.-
Unless you're a technician that works with nano-meeter technology and can fix hardware...

So I hope you still have your guarantee list on the card...
