So I’m new to pc gaming and didn’t have any experience building one but I did anyways. It went pretty well I think but my cpu is overheating like crazy. In a matter of minutes it goes to 90c and I haven’t got passed the bios. My friend gave me his old mother board (ASROCK fatal1ty z97 killer) and it has a i7-4790k with 16gb vengeance LP DDR3. I know it should work fine cause he was using it 3 weeks prior. He got a new one for Christmas. He gave me the motherboard with all of this plugged in and I didn’t mess with the fan. At first I though that it must be a mistake cause I’m only just in the bios. But I felt the back of the mobo and it’s hot soooo. Not sure if this could be anything but maybe needing a new fan even tho he said it worked in his set up.

Did you reseat the cooler?

It sounds like you may need to get some good paste and cleaner. Take off the cooler, clean the CPU, re-apply new paste, and then reseat the cooler and see if the issue resolves.

As a side note...good friend to give you such a capable core. Where that isn't new, it's still very much within spec to game well.
