CPU Overheating On New PC Build (Idle is 50C)

Hi everyone,

My PC Specs are

i5 7600K (Not Overclocked Yet)
EVGA 1070 SC
16 GB RAM
MSI Z270 SLI PLUS
PNY 240GB SSD
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

So I just built my new computer inside of a Mid-Tower NZXT S340 and I am unfortunately experiencing heating and cooling issues.

My system temperature idle is 35C and my CPU temperature idle is 50C.

Under load, the system goes up to ~40C and my CPU jumps to 70-75C.

I originally had an air bubble in my thermal paste so today I cleaned the heat sink and CPU with some isopropyl alcohol and reapplied the heatsink (this time I did NOT lift it back up after making contact with the thermal paste lol) but I am still getting bad temperatures. I tried to use my cases fans, but they only cool down the system and not the CPU.

I need help ASAP before I kill my CPU or something! By the way, I am new to this whole PC building thing so hopefully I am not overreacting!

Thanks for any help solving this. I might be able to buy a liquid cooler but thats an extra $100 that I am not sure I need to spend.

Oh and when I applied the thermal paste I put a small grain of rice but then some extra came out and it turned into a thin pea sized shape... hopefully that is ok.

That's running a bit hot. I have a very similar build, with same mobo, cpu and a 1070, 16gb ram. However, my cpu is 33-35 on idle, and barely reaches 60 on load.
It probably is the way the cpu cooler is mounted, but could be overall system cooling as well. I have an NH-U14S on the cpu, phanteks enthoo pro m for case, 2 front intakes and 1 back/1top exhaust. How many case fans in your system? They will help if they help bring in cool air for your cpu cooler, and take out the hot air it produces.
Still...most likely a case of loose mounting or something not fitting right.


Well the mounting bracket came with the cooler/heat sink and fits well. The heat sink can be twisted with a bit of pressure but it doesn't lift, just turns.
 


I tested by playing Rainbow Six Seige on High/Ultra High settings. 70C when walking, 72-75C when in a fight. I haven't used prime.

2 case fans, back and top. They run full speed no matter what tho. Should I buy a new heat sink/cooler?
 
No I don't think that's it. According to this benchmark:

the difference between out coolers should be like 4C. Some other benchmarks may show a bit more or a bit less but that's nowhere near the difference you're seeing. Some of it is also from the fact I have two additional fans, the additional intake fan especially being important. But still doesn't account for that high a difference. It's something in the way it's being mounted. Unmounting and re-mounting would be my advice.

If you're still unhappy with the temps after, look into case fans is all I can recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OmkmluAYAQ, or a different cooler. Are you controlling the speed of case fans with msi's utility?
Also as mentioned in the previous video I linked, try a different thermal paste maybe.
 


Yeah I am just going to buy that Arctic paste or whatever. And my case fans connect to my PSU, not MOBO so I can't control the speed 🙁
 
Oh. But the mobo supports plenty of fans, I know I'm running 4 fans and still have one fan header to use. Why are you plugging them into psu directly? The mobo will let you control their speed, whether they're voltage or pwm controlled.
 


Huh. So yet its plugged directly into the PSU, yet they don't show up in BIOS or MSi.
 
No, if it's plugged directly into the psu they wouldn't.
If you unplug them from the psu and plug them into fan headers on the mobo instead, then the mobo can recognize them and control them (and power them instead of the psu).
