CPU overheating - which air cooler?

Hi all

I just built a new system with a stock Intel cooler. I have been monitoring CPU temperature, and at some points during benchmarking or using Photoshop it reached 100C! (Although when idle, it's around 35C). So i assume i need a better cooler.

My question is what air cooler would fit my system. I know there are some huge coolers, and I don't want to buy something what wouldn't fit. And there is so much choice that I'm lost...

I have:

1. Corsair 780T case
2. 8700k
3. Asus Strix z370-e MB
4. 32Gb TridentZ ram
5. 1080ti

Any recommendations?

Thanks a lot.

Assuming that the cooler is mounted in the conventional orientation where the fan exhaust is towards the rear of the computer case then the fan that is closest/over the DIMMs can be adjusted upward to clear the DIMMs.

I didn't remove the cpu. But I wonder if i may have overtightened cooler which may have resulted in a bent pin? I did remove ram though - maybe need to check that i connected it properly too.

I'm away for two days, so will need to deal with it tomorrow evening... Fingers crossed.
