CPU overheats when gaming while charging.
Hi I have a Lenovo Y50 laptop, about 2 years old, i recently noticed that whenever i plug in my charger i get high temps, over 60 while browsing the internet over 85 while gaming (constant temps). I used to get max 70 while gaming. the only workaround is to set max processor state under 70% (but ingame performance drops), fans are clean. I taught it was the thermal compound, i replaced it but still no change. Any ideas???

well 70 is ok but that's when im browsing the web ... im talking about gaming it goes up to 88 sometimes 91 depends on the game ... again only happens when AC is plugged in.

85 is pretty warm, but not dangerously hot. Laptops do not have room inside for powerful cooling systems like towers have.

The best solution to this problem is to ignore it. It's not really an issue until you get stressed out about it.

Update: Even 91C is not dangerously hot, although it's rather warm. The machine will likely become entirely obsolete or the screen will fail before the CPU dies of heat.

Can't ignore it, knowing that it might damage the hardware long term ... i used to get max 70-75 while gaming plugged in ... now its just burnning hot (hope it doesnt melt the keyboard JK )

There's no fixing it. Intel designed these CPUs to survive high temperatures - your CPU will not shut down until 130c, to protect itself, which is what Intel considers to be dangerously hot. Lenovo designed their cooling system with this in mind - they don't expect users to ever look at temperatures, and that temperature is not going to hurt it.

Bear in mind that the temperatures you see are relative. A sensor reading of "90c" on an Intel CPU is not the same as 90c on an AMD CPU, or even an older Intel CPU. The sensor is in a different place from generation to generation. If the maximum temperature before throttling is 100c, and you're at 91c, whereas with another CPU it throttles at 60c and you're at 55c, the second CPU is running relatively hotter, and may in fact be hotter in an absolute sense too. Take the actual numbers with a grain of salt.

Ok thanks ... but why do you think that from the day i bought it, up until lately highest temps when gaming while charging were 70 to 75 with the cpu state at 100%

i did use Throttlestop 6.00 (after viewing a tutorial) at one point ... but noticed no difference
i also wouldn't consider the weather ... it was hot for a few days, now it's been raining heat dropped ... same cpu temps :))

On a hand made stand ... with 4cm free space for it to pull air from underneath
I even made a personal Cooling pad with 4 12inch fans connected to a 12V plug ... not helping much 3-5 degrees drop

Go to your Advanded Power Settings or Power Options to reset power plans to default. And then also go to the detailed settings to set how the system runs when it "Plugged in" or "On battery".

resetting didn't help ... how do i access "detailed settings" to set how system runs ...
