Computers Specs
MB Gigabyte Z170x- Gaming 6 Updated to latest BIOS version 23F
CPU I5-6600k
Memory 2x8GB Corsair DDR4 3000MHz
GPU Gigabyte Windforce 1080
PS Corsair CX500

I am trying to OC my Ram(2133Mhz Default) to get the full benefits of the 3000Mhz(listed on the ram). I use the XMP file and it is not stable with my system.
I am able to OC my CPU to 4.6 @ 1.3v it runs stable no problem. Stress tests and under heavy game load for long hours seems fine. EDIT It has eventually crashedd on 4.6Mhz @1.3v. Got a blue screen.

When I try to enable the XMP profile to get 3000Mhz. The PC consistently crashes. Even when I go back to the default cpu settings. Then try the XMP profile it still is unstable. I was looking for some help where to start. I have had this setup for 2 years now. I was going to ugrade my CPU but instead I decided to OC since I got the unlocked version. I thought the XMP profile was one shot and go. Any help is appreciated thank you.

Overclocking your RAM puts more stress on the memory controller inside the CPU. If you are already beyond your CPU limits (since it's crashing) you've got no room to increase the RAM speeds. If it were me, I would lower my CPU OC (or voltage, or both) to find a stable OC on the CPU first. You may find that you have to lower it even further to get your RAM stable at XMP speeds.

You may also be hitting the limits of your power supply (something else to consider).

What would you recommend for a better PSU? It may be a good idea to just upgrade to be safe.

I've previously gotten yelled at for just throwing up a link to a good PSU list so I won't do that again. 😉

What's your budget? Is your case a mid/full tower? Are you looking to upgrade to a PSU that you'll use for at least your next 1-2 builds or are you look for 'good enough for now'?

Update. So I ordered a new PSU RM850. Installed it everything is working. I was actually running 4.6GHZ at 1.32v for the whole weekend. I stressed tested it. Also game for a long time straight it never crashed or gave any issues once. I tried to run the RAM XMP profile then it crashed my system after 5 mins of stress testing. It seems I was able to get a stable OC at 4.6 at 1.32v. But once the Ram XMP profile comes in the equation it is no longer stable. Is it possibly my CPU can not support the 3000Mhz ram speeds? Or is there some things I can try.

UPDATE. I manaully turned down RAM to 2900mhz and turned cpu down to 4.4. So far it is running steady.

Just try de-tuning the CPU to a safe Ghz and enabe the XMP.
Truthfully though, 100Mhz more on the CPU side will help you out more than 100Mhz on the memory side. So if you are hitting a brick wall with the memory controller it is still better to just get the CPU as high as it'll go.
Remember, this is an older CPU. The memory controller on the CPU is only rated for DDR4 2133. To get it up to 2900Mhz is pretty good.
