CPU randomly boosts to 25-30%

Using an I7 720QM, windows 7 home premium. I've noticed the fan ramping up every now and then for no particular reason: so I thought. I opened task manager during one of those 15-20 secs fan boosts, and saw that there was 25-30% cpu usage but about 2 of the 92 apps running were using 1%... where did the rest of the usage come from??

Is this something to do with Windows 7, is my cpu screwed or what?

Might want to run a virus scanner. Might be a virus hidden from the task manager that is utilizing the system without you knowing.

I agree, it might be something infected in your system. Use a good virus-scanning software such as Malwarebytes or A-Squared and do a full thorough scan of your system in safe mode. And also, there are so many hundred of processes and services in your OS that any of them might be causing this for whatever reason. So if its not a virus, it will be quite hard to zero-in on i think.
