CPU reaching 90 degrees while gaming

I recently built a new gaming PC.When idle the CPU is 40 - 50 degress but as soon as I start playing a game the temperature goes up to 90 degress. The other components are at normal temperature only the CPU gets this hot. I don't understand the problem, no cables are blocking the airflow and I used the thermal paste that was on the stock cooler. Can someone tell me what the problem is?

Check your cpu cooler.
If it is in unlocked state, then this will result in bad contact between cpu and cooler.

I already checked the cooler, it is locked and everything looks fine. Nothing is loose

Make sure its in the CPU FAN socket in the motherboard. This is usually located near the fan itself. Also look in the bios and check it isnt disabled,

It is plugged into the CPU FAN socket and it is not disabled

Never heard of an i3 at such temps; remove sink/ fan, reapply thin layer of thermal compound, try again? (Assuming your reading is accurate, which could easily be doubted)

Even with the stock cooler, an i3 shouldn't be able to get hotter than about 50C at full load. If you remove the CPU cooler, does it appear the base was making good contact, or does the paste appear thick as if it wasn't pressed down well?

I removed the old thermal paste and applied some Arctic Silver 5. Temperatures are now 65C while gaming.

Great! 65C still seems pretty warm for a Core i3, but that's a lot better than what you were getting before!

I've been using one of these on an i5-6400 for over a year, and even with the fan at low speed, the temperatures barely go above 50 to 55 while gaming. I did have to watch to make sure it wasn't contacting any capacitors while mounting, but once it was in place, it worked great!
