CPU Red light (only when restarting PC from Windows)

Hi all,

I recently updated my PC with new CPU, MOBO, and RAM (also some fancy wallet crushing lights, but that’s not important here). At the beginning all was well (I think), but recently I have noticed that any time I restart the PC from windows, the red LED CPU light comes on. To be clear, this does not happen when I shutdown the PC and the click the button to restart it. It’s only when the PC is restarting itself. I have checked that I have downloaded all the drivers for the MOBO, done tests of both the RAM (the built in Windows test) and the CPU (intel has a software to check their CPU’s). Everything is working fine according to the tests. Temps are all good. I’ve updated windows. I’ve played around with plugging and unplugging the RAM. Nothing has solved it yet. I can’t imagine it’s some terrible issue because the thing still works, but I don’t have a lot of experience. I should also mention that I updated the BIOS but if I had screwed that up the thing just would even run (or at least that’s what I’ve read).

These are the relevant parts:

- CPU: intel i-5 8400 (liquid cooled)
- MOBO: gigabyte h370 hd3
- RAm: gskill rgb DDR4 2400
- GPU: g1 gaming gtx 1060 6g rev 1

Is the red CPU LED staying on, or just tuning on when booting? The LED lighting up for a short time while the computer is booting up does not indicate a problem.

Thanks for the answer and yeah, should have specified. It stays on, but like I said only when doing a restart, not from cold boot.

Do you have Fast Boot enabled or disabled? Try changing it to see if that makes any difference.

Just got home from work and gave it a try. I had FastBoot disabled and tried enabling it. This did not work, so I disabled it and tried again. Still no luck.

Just tried that. I had to restart using the button on the pc, but im assuming that is what you meant for me to do. Same result, but ive noticed something interesting. When i do the restart and the CPU LED stays on so does the onboard MOBO aesthetic LED (some silly orange line that im not a fan of). Anyway, this is odd because i have turned that LED off usign the RDG Fusion app from Gigabyte's App Center. The aesthetic LED does not light up when I do a normal shut down and turn the PC on myself. Coudl it then just be an issue with the MOBO not making sense of the onboard LEDs? Sorry if thats confusing and thanks for your help so far!

Perhaps this issue has something to do with your liquid CPU cooler. What model is it and how is it connected to the motherboard, through the CPU_FAN header?

It is a CoolerMaster MasterLiquid ML120L RGB and it is connect to the motherboard at the SYSTFAN_1 slot so I can run it full speed all the time. I currently have a case fan plugged into the CPU_FAN header.

That could be confusing the motherboard BIOS. Try shutting down the PC and unplugging the case fan from the CPU_FAN header, then see what happens when you restart from Windows.

Gave it a go. Same issue. I dont know too much about this, but it almost seems like the MOBO is doing a full reset every time i restart. Or smth like that...

The two last bios version, F3 and F4, have problem with windows. When windows start to load, the cpu status led turn on.

I contact with the support of gigabyte and they sent me a beta bios versions to check and still have the same problem.

Try to run a linux live cd. If the cpu status led not turning on, so every thinks is ok and you need to wait to gigabyte release
the new version of bios that fix the problem.

Hi, I am currently running F4 same as you. So you're saying that its possible its a problem with gigabyte software and nothing is actually wrong?

Also, I will try and do that but I have no idea what a Linux Live cd is haha. Would you be able to enlighten me.

linux live cd is a linux that run on ram without need to install on the hdd\ssd.
You just burn it on flash drive and run it.

Apparently there is no problem but try to run a linux live cd.
Another test, when you enter to bios, check if it turned on. if it still turn on (sometimes the boot status led turn on in the bios), you have a problem with the cpu or the cpu fan.
