I've had this computer for about 4 years, but I just now decided to check the temps just for the fun of it. I found that my cpu was running around 70c-80c just browsing the web!! Right now it's jumping between 54-64c.. This is an hp touchsmart so it's almost as compact as a laptop, though it still seems that it shouldn't be running this hot. The cpu is a Core 2 Duo p8400 @2.27ghz. Is this normal???????????????

That's one of those "all in one" PCs where everything is built into the LCD monitor case. Guts wise, it's a laptop. I'm typing this right now on a 4-year old Lenovo T400 lappy with a C2D P8600 (2.4GHz). HW Monitor is showing temps spiking up to 50C under load (idling around 30c). Indoor temp is about 20C. But you are still well within the maximum thermal range of that chip.

Like the other guy said, you likely have dust build-up in the cooling fan and heat sink. Not sure how easy it is to work on those all-in-ones, but at the very least I would blow out the air intake and exhaust ports. About once a year I disassemble my laptops and PCs and completely clean them out.

People are really surprised how dusty the inside of a PC or laptop...

People are really surprised how dusty the inside of a PC or laptop can get without routine maintenance. We have to change oil and air filters in our cars to keep them running in top shape, so the same relative PM (preventative maintenance) needs to be done for computers (and gaming consoles).

I've also noticed that it's been running a bit sluggish lately. Could this be due to the cpu temps even though it's below it's max rated temp? I've checked the task manager and it seems that there isn't anything hogging resources.

No, that generally wouldn't be hardware related. Not sure what operating system you have (Vista? Win7?), but over time files and junk clog up the hard drive and Windows registry, slowing the system down. Other things that can slow down a computer are malware and viruses. I have Vista on this laptop and have reloaded the OS twice in four years (completely reformat the hard drive and reload everything from scratch). So far I see no need to do that after several years of having Win7 on my other laptops and PCs.

Have you tried running a hard drive disk defragmenting program and do you have a good anti-virus/internet security program?
