Hi all,

So for a while now my system was running CS:GO really badly for it's specs (~70-100fps).
I've only now go around to checking it out and noticed that my CPU was running really hot. With an average of around ~80-90 Celsius under VERY minimal load. Playing CS i get to 100 degrees. I was using the stock intel cooler.

I pulled out the CoolerMaster Hyper Tx3 from my brothers computer and stuck it in mine. I get slightly lower temps (75c no load) but still about 100c playing CS.
Note: I did put fresh thermal paste on before testing any of these.

SPECS:
CPU - Intel Xeon e3 1230v3
GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970
MOBO - Asus B85M-F

Thanks for the help!

Edit: added system images:

Solution
come on man! clean all the old thermal paste!! from what I see in the pics there is dry(old) thermal paste on the cpu and you reapplied new without cleaning the old first!
try cleaning it ALL + the dust around the socket and reapply new thermal paste properly! watch a tutorial on youtube.
you use hyper tx3 and still running 100c???
have you tried to take the cpu out of the socket and put back in properly?
have you applied thermal paste correctly?
is the cpu fan connected on the board and spinning?

Yeah with hyper its at 100c.
I haven't tried taking the CPU in and out yet I'll give it a shot tomorrow as its late here.
As far as I know the thermal paste is fine and the fans are definitely spinning.

Thanks for the reply

100c with a hyper tx3?? Check if the heatsink base is flush with the heatspreader of the cpu and the thermal paste should be correctly applied. Check your voltages too. Doesn't your pc shutdown at such temperature?

Solution
I cleaned up the paste on the cooler. I've asked mum to pick up isopropyl alcohol to clean the dry paste off the cpu.
Again thanks for the help. I'll update you tonight if there is progress

we're glad to helpl! just update if you have been able to fix the issue.

All the profiles were on standard and i haven't overclocked. My cpu fans and chassis fans were fine and running.

actually i'd say i'm getting 31-33c temps for truly idle. Still quite high though.

then you are just fine. 31-33c are good idle temps.

Thanks for the help by the way. So glad it's fixed! Have a nice day.

Like Gary063 says. Clearly your problem has been lack of good thermal contact between CPU and HS. Cleaning old compound and applying new compound has helped enormously but I believe you may still have too much. The thermal compound should be as thin as possible consistent with full or nearly full coverage of the surfaces. Little or no compound should squish out from between the surfaces.

It is possible to look up the max temp allowed on your CPU but I doubt it is over 100C. You should consider yourself lucky it wasn't destroyed. Usually the OS will shut down the system at temperatures as high as you were seeing.

Stock coolers are bad, you should get some corsair watercooling they are cheap, but you can keep running your cpu whit the stock cooler and replace the thermal paste for an artic cooling silver and watch if that improve your cpu temps.

There is no need for water cooling on a CPU that isn't even overclocked. Besides he has fixed the problem and his temps are fine on his Cooler Master CPU cooler.

Stock coolers aren't bad. If they were then there would be dead cpu's all over the place. They are plenty good enough for a stock computer- although there are more efficient designs out there they all cost money. Not everyone has the money to just throw at things- did you even notice his age?
