CPU runs 100 °C after Corsair H115i was installed

Hello,

I have just installed a brand new Corsair H115i CPU cooler. I have i7-4790K on Gigabyte Z97 MOBO.

When I first turned the PC on, the fans went off like crazy. I checked the CPU temperatures and they were almost 100 °C. I immediately turned the PC off. What could be the problem?

I did apply my own thermal paste, the Arctic MX-2, I used the "pea" method I saw on YouTube.

The screws of the pump seem to be tightened as much as possible.

P.S. Could my CPU get damaged if it runs hot while I am trouble shooting or will the PC just turn off? Should I be worried?

Well... in the bios it should be auto set for your PC to shut off when it reaches a certain limit but 90+ temp is dangerous. CPU coolers can be hard to install and it sounds like it might not be installed right.

Is your AIO making any weird noises by any chance? Your CPU could get damaged from the heat but the system would shut itself off pretty quick. Best to try and fix without itt being on.

I suggest taking the cooler off again and ensuring any connections are properly seated that relate to the cooler as it sounds like either your cooler is not seated properly or not all of the wires are properly connected if at all.

If the CPU temperature almost instantaneously shoots up to 100C, then the IHS probably isn't making proper contact with the block.

If the CPU temperature creeps up to 100C over ~30 seconds, the pump isn't working.

If it is something in-between near the low end, maybe there is air in the CPU block and that is stalling the pump.

I just finished building a PC from the scratch. I bought these items:
- Gigabyte GTX 1080 Ti OC
- MSI Z97 Z97P-D3 (second hand because it's not being sold anymore)
- Corsair H115i
- Seasonic Prime 750W PSU
- Corsair Obsidian 750D case

Things I already had in my previous build:
- Intel i7-4790K CPU
- Kingston HyperX Fury RAM 2x4GB (8 GB total)
- 256 GB SSD & 1 TB HDD

I installed everything (probably a 4th PC that I have built so I don't consider myself a complete newbie).

When I first turned on the PC, I was very glad because a Windows 10 installation that was on the SSD loaded up just fine. Voilá, no need for clean install.

Then I noticed the fans on the H115i radiator, going very loud. I thought that it was unusual so I started CoreTemp and saw these huge temperatures on all cores, 95C+, yellow colored. I turned the PC off.

The Corsair logo on the pump IS illuminated but I am not sure if that's important.

Here is how I connected the cables:

The USB cable on the bottom of the pump goes up, behind the MOBO and down to USB connector on the MOBO as seen in the following picture (it's the USB3 one on the right side):

The following is how I connected the SATA cable. I plugged one that came with the PSU into it and then the cable coming from the pump - I connected them together as on this picture. Not sure if I did that right...

I would really like to avoid dismounting the pump as I already have all the cables in place, routed, zip tied and all.

Do you guys see the problem from the info that I provided? Or is the pump mounted wrong? 🙁

As I wrote earlier:
- instant 100C: poor/no contact between the IHS and block
- slower ramp to 100C: failed/stalled pump

Use a long screwdriver or similar object to connect your ear to the pump. If you can't hear a distinct pump and flow noises coming directly from the pump through the screwdriever, then the pump isn't pumping for one reason or another.

Another way to tell if you have a contact or flow issue is to check if the CPU block and pipes are getting hot. If the CPU is at 100C but the block/pipes are still cold, then you have a contact issue. If the block is getting hot but both pipes remain cold, then you have low/no flow.

What do you mean by the screwdriver? Should I touch the pump with it and press my ear to the other end and listen?

Perhaps a stupid question, I only know listening through a wall with a glass :-D

Ok guys, so I turned the PC on to listen to the pump and trouble shoot...

The Windows loaded, the fans are quiet and we're idling at 23 °C on all cores.

I did absolutely NOTHING. So if anyone has this issue in the future, my advice is to turn the PC off, wait 2 hours and turn it back on. LOL.

Or maybe god saw my desperation and fixed it. No idea.

Anyway thanks for every advice you gave me. It might help someone else 🙂
