CPU Selection Help

Hello wonderful people I'm looking for the best CPU in terms of money to value ratio for me, I'm running with a GTX 1070 + i5 6500

For a cheap upgrade for gaming I was looking at the i5-8600K, I have a 144 hz monitor and I play games like Warframe, Frostpunk, MMOs, and other various graphically intensive games.

My motherboard has an LGA 1151 socket, I plan on purchasing the i5-8600K (which from what I've looked up is compatible with 1151) and a Noctua NH-D15 for cooling.

I've experienced major bottlenecks playing all of the aforementioned games when it came to going over 60 fps, high CPU usage, and low GPU usage.

Ideally I would love an upgrade that would allow me to run games at max or near max settings with a balance in usage, any help is appreciated thank you in advance!

tldr: Is the i5-8600K a good upgrade from i5 6500 to stop bottlenecks for the GTX 1070?

...or (probably not as cheap) an i7-7700K. Here is the CPU support list for that board and the BIOS update if needed. Nice board Digital Storm used.

In today's games, it is almost necessary to get more than a 4 core CPU if you want to press a gfx card like the GTX 1070 to 100% usage (thus increasing the fps). The 6-core i5-8600K is a step in the right direction.
But you will need a 300-series board for the i5-8600K. I presume you have that?

Well all I know is that its an LGA 1151 socket, I thought it was all I needed, it's a prebuilt gaming PC I received as a gift built by digital storm, I can try to do some digging and figure that out though.

Yeah, you need to find out the make/model of the motherboard. Or see if the model is printed on the board. The 5th and 6th gen 1151 CPUs were built around the 100 and 200-series chipset. The advancements in the 7th and 8th gen warranted the new 300-series boards.

Yeah I was literally just looking at that.. I'll probably just end up getting that, its a tiny bit better than the i5 from the comparisons I just looked at, thanks a ton for the help!
