I used probably 3 or 4 zip ties to solidly secure the fan resting on the top of my motherboard so that part of the fan would blow air under the motherboard and the rest is blowing on the vcore heat sink. It may take some creativity to get it mounted so that it doesn't move around. I was lucky and found some good places to zip tie it off too right around where I wanted it. Using black zip ties will help it to look not so homemade, for the temp drops I experienced though I could care less if someone things it looks a little off.
As for the vent on the top of your case. If it has mounting holes that match up with either a 120mm or 200mm fan then you would definitely be able to mount a fan there. If you provide me with the make and model...
