CPU started getting hot all of a sudden

I just finished my new build and I just got my last part (the graphics card) yesterday. I went to install it and everything went perfectly; the computer turned on, the cards fans were spinning. My monitor did not have the right connector to plug into the card so I just plugged it into the mobo. I did not get any signal to the monitor so I removed the graphics card and turned the computer back on and I was getting a signal to my monitor now. I then decided to play a game and noticed that my FPS had dropped from the usual 60 to around 15-20. The CPU also ran much hotter than usual when I was playing.
I've checked and rechecked everything to make sure I didn't unplug anything. I realize it could just be the game, but I was wondering if anyone here had some insight.

So when were you getting 60fps? And how hot is the CPU getting? It might be temporary due to accidental misplacing of a part, or maybe pushing the CPU heatsink causing it to get upset for a bit.

It's because you removed the Video card. The video card handles the graphics operations. When you removed it, the operations were loaded onto the cpu and the internal graphics. Depending on your cpu, you may get good fps (30-60 on an A8) or bad fps (stop motion - 20 on a Pentium P6100). You'd want to get a DVI-to-VGA adaptor (if my assumptions are correct) so you can plug your monitor to your video card.

I was getting 60fps before I installed the graphics card. And when I'm playing it used to only ever get to around 60C, but now it goes up to 80C sometimes. I also checked the heatsink, it seemed well seated to me, I'll check it again just to make sure.

I ordered one this morning actually. But I'm still confused about the framerate drop. Basically all I did was install the graphics card then remove it again. I wouldn't think that would cause a decrease in fps. It's an i7-4770k by the way.

Intel's onboard graphics actually suck so I'm not too surprised about the fps drop. Onboard graphics use the processing power of the cpu which adds to its load thus making it hotter. You said that you plugged your monitor to the provided port on the mobo so I assumed that you are using the onboard graphics and not a dedicated video card. Your best bet would be to test it out with the monitor attached to the video card when you get the DVI-to-VGA adapter and see if it improves (it supposedly should).
