Hello everyone,
My cpu started overheating and shutting down. I’ve tried troubleshooting it to the best of my abilities, but so far haven’t resolved this.
The system is about 5 years old.
CPU: Intel Core I7 4790k
Ram: 24gb DDR3
Motherboard: Gigabyte z97-HD3
Graphics: Intel onboard graphics 4600
NVIDIA geforce GTX970
120MM Closed-Loop Liquid Cooling CPU Cooler
This is a PC used mostly for Video Editing, and that’s when the overheating happens.
If I try editing a word or notepad doc, it shoots up to between 60-70 degrees, if I try browsing the internet it sometimes starts to get into the 80s or 90s, it will probably get even higher and shut down but I manually shutdown before that happens.
If I try editing a video, it immediately shoots up to 90+ degrees, and if I try to render out a video it overheats and shuts down.
I’m using CoreTemp and speccy to gauge temps
Here’s what I’ve done so far:
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

Here’s what I’ve done so far:
- Checked to make sure all my fans were working
- Cleaned out PC of dust
- Scanned for malware/virus/spyware
- Clean install
- Updated Bios
- Ran Intel Diagnostics Test - CPU Passed
- Reapplied Thermal Paste
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much
