Hi all,
I've just replaced my thermal paste on my CPU and cooler - I've done this before with no issues. I took out the CPU and re-seated it fine as I have done previously.
After I restarted my computer and got back into Windows, I noticed that my CPU was running at 3.2 Ghz at idle when it usually went down to 1.2 Ghz and would ramp up as necessary when running apps/games. My OC setting has been 4.1 Ghz in the bios for years. I decided to restart and check the bios settings and nothing had changed from previous. Intel Speedstep is Auto and frequency max 4.1 Ghz, 1.32v max Vcore, hyperthreading on.
After this restart however, my CPU is now seemingly stuck at 4.1 Ghz all the time. Please see screenshot of HW Monitor in Windows.
I have a i7-3930k and Asus P9X79. As you can see from the screen shots, temps maxed out a bit high because of the constant 4.1 Ghz. Previously I was idling around 35 degrees. Using a Cooler Master Nepton 140XL cooler too. Pea sized amount of MX4 paste.
Does anyone have any idea on how I can get my CPU back to running at variable frequency and therefore lower the temps a bit? I appreciate that at low CPU utilisation (1-15%) temps are currently 43-50c when at 4.1Ghz but I'd rather not stress the system out unless I need to.
Many thanks
James
