CPU swap failure

Today my CPU arrived which is a massive upgrade to the previous one, however when I put it in and attempted to power the computer nothing happened. I changed back to the old CPU and everything loaded up fine, is it defective or did I damage it? Or can my computer not handle it

We aren't mind readers here.... Which cpu/motherboard is your old one? Which one are your replacing it with?

What happens when you try to power on? Any beeps? Errors? Sign off life?

Old CPU is intel celeron g3900, new is intel i5 8400, motherboard is Asus prime z270-a I have 2x8gb ram, 650v power supply and a gtx1060

8th gen cpus do not work on the 100 and 200 series board. They only work on 300 series boards. Your i5 8400 is not compatible with your z270 board.

Oh no that's a massive bummer... I guess I'll need a new motherboard then? Thanks for your help I appreciate it

To run your 8400 you would need a motherboard. But if you're able to return your cpu by any chance, you could get a 7th Gen Intel cpu instead, which will work on your current motherboard
