CPU temp 92°C

I overclocked i7-7700K to 5.0GHz at voltage of 1.34. While stress testing on Prime95 for 3 minutes the max temp already hit 92°C.

After that it just hit 90°C once in 6 minutes, is this a thing I need to be worried about?

Its not that playing CPU-Heavy games will get the temp reach the 92°C but still, should I be worried?

Solution

5 is 5, doesn't matter whether it is at 40c or 70c, at higher temps higher voltage is needed, which makes higher temps. 70c under test load is ok, it'll be lower under gaming load.

What is your cooler? 85+ is the point where you should be looking at new cooling. 5GHz is a VERY high overclock for that CPU, so it's no wonder that the temps are so high. I would back off on the voltage a bit until you can get 100% CPU usage under 85C. Either that or get a new cooler.

You can try to make some adjustments to your cooler and thermal paste to improve temps, but in all honesty that's not uncommon for an i7 7700k to see those temps in Prime95

Intel did a poor job of the internal thermal paste and delidding the CPU is necessary to improve temperatures. Fortunately, the max temp is 100'C, and Intel swears that the CPU will not be damaged if you stay below that temp.

Personally, I would avoid using Prime95 unless necessary to test stability.

If my cpu was ever at 92°C I'd be jumping for the power cord.

Try to keep the cpu at least below 80°C.

92°C may be workable, but if the air conditioning ever goes out at your house or any fan breaks on the computer while playing a cpu demanding game there is a good chance the cpu might break 100°C at which point ... immediate involuntary thermal shutdown.

Your overclock should be perfectly stable and safe if you dial it back to 4.8 and reduce some voltage.

I currently have dual fan tower heatsink cooler by coolermaster it cost me 90€ so it should be good. I put hella cooling paste there too

More thermal paste is not better. Too much thermal compound can cause problems and bad cooling performance.

lots of paste is not a good thing, think thin smear and not layer.

I have "cooler master hyper 212 led". Cost me 80€ and it was recommended by local hardware store for overclocking the 7700K. They are quite nerds and like to build pc's so I tought they know what they are talking about. And 5.1Ghz is what most people overclock the 7700K. I tought to go a little lower so I put 5.0, you definetly can OC this to 5.2

Here's a massive thread with other users with the same issue as you - https://communities.intel.com/thread/110728

I went through the same thing you did with my 7700K. There's nothing you can do to reduce temps unless you Dellid or put your voltage to stock settings/reduce clock speed.

It doesn't matter which cooler you have, or which application of thermal paste you choose to do. The problem is within the CPU itself.

Luckily the max safe temp is 100'C, and if anything should go wrong with the CPU, you're covered under warranty anyway. You also got those temps in the most ruthless CPU benchmark there is. During gaming you won't see those temps.

Those nerds are incorrect. Overclocking to 5+ gigahertz is an extreme overclock and should not be dissipated by a $30 cooler. You'll have to purchase a higher end cooler which will better dissipate the heat. You will see a difference going from a hyper 212 evo to a higher end Noctua.

Yea dude that's a pretty basic entry level cooler. You should upgrade. And those dudes in the local hardware store ripped you off.

Unfortunately I have to agree, that's not an $80 cooler, and it's not good enough for a 7700k extreme OC. The official recommendation is to use a 135W cooling solution on a 80W processor, and that's at stock speeds, you need a 200W+ cooling solution to manage that processor.

Uhh to finland that cooler costs 75€, even from your newegg.. (very) expensive...
