I am using a intel core i7 4790k with the stock cooler (arctic silver 5 thermal paste if that makes a difference) and when i used prime95 to max the cpu for thermal tests after about 5 mins it was at 100 degrees is this good, bad or really bad (as in must have a aftermarket cooler), my pc is mainly used for gaming as the rest of my specs are:

Intel Core i7 4790k
MSI GTX 970
2 x 8GB of HyperX fury
Gigabyte z97p-d3
4 x Corsair 120LED fans (2 in the front (Air In), 1 in the back and 1 on the top(Air Out))
Corsair VS550 Power Supply
120 GB SSD (Boot)
1TB HDD (Mass)

Any response to this would be very helpful and if any other information is needed please ask and i will try to reply as soon as possible, i am relatively new to the custom build pc world so any assistance would be nice thanks :)

Ps: I have not overclocked my CPU

Solution

I believe VCore is the volts the CPU is running at. Eg my cpu says it must be between 0.65V and 1.3V, ( intel said over 1.3V is harmful but you dont overclock Xenons.
VR IN is the voltage the MB delivers to the CPU. On mine it supposed to be avout 1.8V ( so yours looks OK and similar) note apparently that can be up to 2.5V. Dont confuse them as ai ntel told me if...

I think that is far too hot.
My package runs at 42C and each core runs at 35 to 37C. And Imam aiming to reduce it further.

Intel has a CPU diagnostics program and wthin that their is a little stress test circa says cpu 99.97 utilisation. It must read at least 1C under the CPUs max permissable temp. Mine was running 45C under the max permissable temp.
I would look that up and run it. Its what Intel did for me so not sure of the exact link.

Being a novice I went for the Noctua NH D15 massive heat sink and 2 fans for £69, beautiful build quality!

Well what I would do is reapply thermal paste, then test again, if you get almost the same temps... Buy an aftermarket cooler like the Hyper 212 Evo or Cryorig H7, which are very cheap but they do very good.

And yea, 100 degrees is pretty bad...

I would get the hyper evo 212 cooler, and go ioto your bios and check to see what the voltage is set to, its prob set to auto. make sure it is not passed 1.25-1.3 MAX if it is then change the core voltage manually to 1.25 then run the test again

When looking at my BIOS it says CPU Vcore = 1.260v and CPU VRIN = 1.788v which one is which / which one do i look at?

Hey i have read some people online saying that prime95 over version..?? dont remeber which shouldn't be used since it will for sure overload your cpu.

Have you OCed that? IF you are ocing then it is almost a must to get a nice cooler

It is a good idea to just use your pc in some games for a while and check your temps.

When playing games the highest temps i have seen are around 60 - 70 and no my CPU is at the stock 4.00GHz dont tend on OverClocking unless games start needing it

Money isn't really an issue i just never got round to changing the cooler, would i be better off getting a all-in-one water cooler or will the hyper 212 evo be just fine?

60-70 is fine. No risk for your CPU. If you want to get them lower, which will allow you to OC when you need it (and that will be when your CPU bottlenecks your GPU, a long time in the future) you could get a 212. It will make your pc quieter and i value that a lot!

If you dont plan on overclocking the hyper will be fine. My i74790k is 67-74 degrees with prime running with hyper evo.

If you want to spend 100-175 bucks water cool will be even cooler than that and unlocks possibility of max overclock.

Okay, if my CPU isn't in any immediate harm i will think about the discussion on going for a Hyper 212 Evo or maybe a water cooled one over the next day or so. My PC being quiet isn't that big of an issue to me because it is farm enough away from my desk i don't tend to hear it, and as i said i will proably only start to overclock my CPU if / when games start needing me too. Games are running in fine i was just wondering about the temps and thank you guys so much for the help, i hope you wont mind me contacting you again if in have any other trouble with my pc :)
