CPU Temp +Windows Death

Hi,

I just finished setting up my new mobo/cpu/case. This is the first time i have home built a system and to me suprise pushing the power button worked on the first time and i was able to enter bios. Watching the Hardware monitor I see that my CPU temp is sitting around 50 Celcius (for about an hour now), this seems a bit to high to me (using stock retail fan), i'm running an XP 3200+ (barton), any possibility i screwed up installing the heat sink?

The other problem I am having is the blue screen of death hitting me when i try to boot. I realize formating the drive would be easier but I just finished getting everything back from when my last disk failed and would like to avoid it at all costs My biggest problem is that the blue screen only flashes for a second so I can't even see the error, are there any common errors that are given that I could look into? I think i saw someting about 'virus' before the monitor flashed back to the bios screen.

Edit: the last thing it attempts to load before crashing is amdagp.sys if that means anything?

List ur system spec..
and no, 50C is not high, nth to worry about. I have my cpu running at 46C idle and 49C full loaded, but that's undervolting and with 3 cases fan working..

and a clean windows installation is prefered when you are switching a motherboard.

in almost every case of adding a new mobo u will have to format your hdd to be sure for stability.

50c seems okish for a stock fan, if your worried pick up a 3rd party hsf

If u do things right.... People won't be sure you've done anything at all......

I've got an AMD 3200 XP+
512 PC 3200 (another 512 comming next pay check )
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo
Geforce 3 until friday when my MSI Radeons 9800 'pro'(apparently it uses the R360) comes in
I've got a dvd rom and a cdrw, one 160 GB HD.

My old motherboard had no support for serial ATA, I know that windows needs special drivers say if your installing it on a new drive that runs on serial ATA. Could windows be looking at my hardware, seeing the SATA and freaking out? In the end i'll probably have to format the darn thing again, pain in the neck

Can you boot into Safe Mode? (press F8 While it's booting to get the boot options menu, pick safe mode). If you can, then go in and remove all the hardware devices in device manager. Then when windows boots up again, it should detect a load of new stuff instead of expecting the old stuff.

Failing that, you might be able to get away with booting off your XP CD and doing a 'Repair' installation. That will keep all your old files & settings.

A Clean Format/re-install is still recommended though.

Nah can't get into safe mode, looking around microsofts knowledge base it looks like it could be that this chipset has a different IDE controller then my old one which needs to be loaded into the registry, they have a process to merge some keys into the registry so that windows it aware of all the out of box supported chipsets. Either way probably should my makeself an XP CD (downloaded XP through schools partnership with microsoft in the past) the only device that has changed is the mobo and the cpu so the device manager shouldnt have all that much.... but in any event,thanks for the help.

This is a clean install of windows right?

50c at no load does sound a bit high. What mobo are you using and the settings?

ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo.. i can't recall what the mobo temperatures were (at work right now) but i believe they were around 34C after an hour.

being "just the mobo and cpu" doesn't matter.. The mobo controls everything in the computer. Your best bet is to re-install the OS.

Failing that, do as Chipdeath suggested and try a repair. Those are (realisticaly) your only options.

Incase anyone was curious for future reference I was able to fix the problem by putting the drive back on its beloved chipset so it could boot to windows. I then set it to load the proper IDE controller for my new system on startup. Plugged it into the new system and its working great. Used a driver cleaning program in safe mode to clean up any old drivers that were still lying around and should be good to go.
