I got a notification from Windows that my CPU temp is 81 degrees C. When I look at NZXT Cam it's telling me the temp is around 35 degrees C.

So which one is more reliable?

Hm. On the lower-left part of a screen there is a small, square message balloon from which various notifications pop up. That's where it appeared. It's gone now but I it said it was from something along the lines of "Microsoft.notifications".

I'm new to Windows 10 (spent a decade in Mac world), so I'm still learning my way around the OS. If it comes back I'll take a screenshot.

Just a thought, but could the motherboard be sending the info to the OS? Can't think what else could be monitoring the temp. I have a Gigabyte Z390 Designare.

So after some googling it seems that it's NZXT Cam itself that is the culprit. (See here)

Strange that the program wouldn't show the high temp on its own dashboard but send it through Windows.

Via Windows notifications? Interesting.

Windows notifications is a service, so in simplest terms instead of the software making a notification itself, it comes up with a message, contacts Windows Notification service, and says "please put this up on the screen" and there you go. Now that said, you can also program your software to bypass the service and provide their own notifications. But I'm not surprised a simple monitor program from a case manufacturer, decided to skip reinventing the wheel.
