CPU Temperature 125C - 127C... Idle

Just built my first ever PC a couple of weeks ago. It was sans GPU until today - I just slotted in a geforce Gt 640.

So, I'm testing out the new horsepower (I know this is a pretty rotten card, but anyways) with my copy of Deus Ex HR, when suddenly the game locks up, and I'm randomly booted with Windows with no error message. I think nothing of it, but decide to check out what my GPU temperature is like, because I noticed its a pretty quiet card.

And then, horror of horrors, I stumble across this

I let the computer idle for 20 mins, but the temperature fluctuates between 71 and 127, usually sticking around temperatures of 110C+

I open up the case, and it turns out that the plastic-push screws might not have been punched through the mobo 100%, but otherwise the CPU fan was very much in place. I had a friend help me put everything together, and I cant quite remember how it was done, but I do remember the CPU's thermal paste was sort of sparingly 'pre-applied' to the base of the fan.

I'm thinking letting the thing sit and taking it to my local cimputer shop for a check-up since I am still very unconfident with taking things apart.

Do you guys think this could be a thermal paste thing, or something a bit trickier?

Also, my first post on TH, and it's a cry for help.

Hello :p

First, I would use a second app to check the temps such as HW monitor and make sure that reading isn't erroneous. Second, not having those Push pins anchored properly can make a difference. You have to have equal pressuer on all four corners ( and the reason I don't like them ). Obviously, you used the stock fan that came with the processor, which is fine as you are not overclocking. The TMC that comes preapplied on those things, is alright I guess, but I usually recommend using some alcohol and cleaning it off and applying some good stuff such as Arctic silver 5. At that temp. I am surprised the computer is still running at that temp. Usually it will shut down to keep from frying the CPU.

I got these results from HW monitor. CPUITN at 127C again, as soon as I booted the PC. Should I be worried??

Alright :( What is CPUTIN? Because the CPU core temp is quite low (33C)

I checked that out. However, I think I *might* have made a big mistake. I just stumbled across this video. At 4:40.

That is exactly how my fan / heatisnk was - with the 3 segments of grey stuff. I assumed the fan/heatsink had to be stuck on like that without any messing about. Nothing is mentioned in the manual.

However, in the video, the guy wipes off the stock stuff, and reapplies a new paste in an even layer.

Could it be I'm getting this problem because I bogusly applied the paste? I get that this would be kinda my fault for rushing into things without reading (first pc and all) - but i find it weird that this would be mentioned in the CPUs manual.

The pre-applied paste is fine (I'm assuming you put the stock fan on. ie. the one that came with the cpu.) I honestly think you weren't getting a great connection with your thermal plate and cpu heat spreader, which can cause major issues.

And I'm a little suspect of the temp you're getting. Usually the computer would shut off as a safety mechanism way before you could hit that number. Try RealTemp (http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/) if you want a second opinion.

Fixing it is entirely up to your discretion though. If you decide to do it yourself, then I suggest Tek Syndicate or Linus Tech Tips on youtube about how to apply thermal paste. If you're uncomfortable doing that, take it to your local shop and have them look at it.

Also screenshot your HW monitor for us if you could please.

Hi Brendan,

Thanks for all the helpful info. Here is a screenshot of my HW monitor.

As you can see, in the motherboard section, CPUTIN is at 125C

If your have the Intel Heatsink/Fan and you wish to reapply some thermal paste it is very easy and you do not have to take out the motherboard.......Sometimes the heatsink is not screwed in properly and then there would no be the right amount of pressure on the CPU and can also be uneven leaving the CPU more prone to heating up....

Very interesting indeed. Well as I said before, it's up to you if you want to do it yourself or take it to the shop.

If you are interested in trying it yourself or having your friend help you'll want to use 70-90% isopropol, and artic mx-4 paste (it's like $7).
