CPU temperature goes crazy high after new GPU installed

Hey guys, i hope you can help me.
Recently i upgraded my old video card (ASUS Radeon HD 6670) for a Sapphire Radeon RX 460, suddenly i noticed that my CPU started to overheat, randomly the PC was shutting down even in idle state.
I have replaced the thermal paste on the processor (AMD Phenom II 965 Black edition) and the the shutting down issue got solved, however when i play video games the CPU temperature goes up to 80 or 85 degrees, and it keeps increasing.
In the begining i though the GPU power consumptiong was affeting the overall temperature in the system, however i ran Prime95 and i get temperatures up to 100 degrees just 3 minutes after the program starts. Of course in this case the GPU is not working at all, so it is clearly a CPU issue.
Any idea what could be the problem?
Im using the stock cooler, and I have 3 fans, 2 outake and 1 intake. I never had any problems before with the old video card, so i dunno whats the problem :/

PC Specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II 965BE
GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 460
RAM: 8GB OCZ Reaper 12800
PSU: 650W
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H
OS: Windows 10 64bit

The CPU temp in idle is around 38 or 39º celcius, but when i play video games, or when i run Prime 95 it goes up to 90º or something like that, it could be more buty i stop the program.

It sounds like you may have been bottlenecked by your old GPU, so when you made the switch to the new one, suddenly your CPU is allowed to try as hard as it can, and your poor stock cooler can't keep up.

You ran it in Prime95, but only for 3 minutes. That's not a super long stress test. Run it for like 10 or 15 minutes and see if any workers fail.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply, im afraid to burn the CPU if I let prime95 running for more than 5 minutes. Are you sure there is no problem with that?

Maybe. If your temps are 100c, you've got a real thermal issue and you need a better cooler anyway, which is where I would start.

I think when you put your new Graphics card in the pc you must have nudged your cooler and broke the paste seal .

The thermal paste was already reaaplied after i replaced the video card. So i think thats not the problem :/

Its definitely an issue with cpu cooling, I would check your cooler is working or the cooler is not quite connecting with the cpu how it should.

Hey guys, thanks for your help, a quick update for today.
I changed the thermal paste and I added a new intake fan at back of the PC (now i have 2 intake, one outake), now the maximum temperature gets stabilized at 78º Celsius after 10 minutes with Prime 95, do you think thats still too hot for an AMD Phenom?

well.... thanks 😀 .. but i still have some doubts, according to the AMD Phenom datasheet the max temp is 62º Celsius, so maybe it could get damaged after a while if it works at 78ºC temp.

Prime pushes the cpu to the limit ,Games wont push it quite as far but a good cooler will make some difference.
What cooler are you using ?

Im using just the stock cooler, the strange thing is Im not doing any overclock, I am just using the computer as i used before, but since i got the new video card the temperatures started to rise without any reason

I have been running Battlefield 1 for the last 2 or 3 hours, CPU is always working at 95 or 100% and the temperature reached its max value at 68ºC, so for me its quite ok. I think the new thermal paste did the trick, the name is Shinetsu G-7783 (japanese product). I talked to the clerk in the hardware store and this paste was the only thing he had, but it turns out that the product is really good, now i have checked some reviews in the internet aswell and its getting many love from other people, check it out.
