Ive read countless threads on similar issues, none of them helped because they were either ancient, or not compatible with my setup.

Lets get the obvious questions out of the way, ive seen enough threads to know the basic rules of engagement when talking about computers..

Specs:
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AMD Chipset
AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0Ghz 125W 8-Core
EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3Gb 384-Bit GDDR5
EVGA Geforce GT 610 1Gb DDR3 (Monitors Only)
32Gb Kingston Beast RAM
PSU 1100Watt (Forgot the brand, etc. Will grab if needed.)

Problem:
As you can likely guess, i game on this computer, as of late my PC will randomly shutoff while in the middle of playing games, specifically these two games, every other game runs fine regardless of temperature.

As a computer geek i pride myself in knowing whats going on with my system, but sadly, nobody knows everything, luckily there is the internet, right? (Sometimes..)

Now before i just randomly ask for help, wich would be a generally impossible question to answer, im going to list off everything ive experienced and done in the last 3 days to solve this issue, so that way we are all on the same page.

Day 1, Guild Wars 2.

After playing Guild Wars 2 for a couple hours, my computer does a hard shutoff, the last time i checked my CPU temp it was hovering at around 75-79C (Roughly 165F)

As long as ive known, 80C is a bit hot, but still not hitting the 90C CPU Shutoff point. So i thought it strange and let my PC cool off and resumed playing, After a couple hours, emergency shutoff again, problem has formed.. Google searches and forum post reading for a few hours, came up with a few solutions that seem to work. Setting the game to Compatibility Mode WinXPSP3, turning down a couple settings, game works perfect now, no crashes, no shutdowns after 6+ hours of play with no break. CPU temp still hovering at 79C, but no shutdowns. Thought things are fine, until..

Day 2, ArcheAge Beta Event.

ArcheAge, new game new fun, similar graphics to GW2, so after playing a few hours my PC shuts down, same as GW2. I appy the same fixes to ArcheAge as i did to GW2, Only difference was im still running it in DX11, since DX9 is unplayable (No Textures load.)

Played for a solid 16 hours (Launch day.. had to stay up late..) Keeping a hawk eye on my temperature monitor, still hopping up to 79C, no amounts of box fans, open case, anything helped, until i stole the AC from my living room and cooled down the office to a perfect 68F..

Effects where immediate, CPU temp went down and hovered anywhere between 60 and 70C, Peeeeeeerfect. Problem solved right?

Day 3, Gaming hangover, and a problem returns..

Wake up at 2PM, flip on the AC, get right back on ArcheAge, played for another 12 hours, no issues. Until.... My AC is turned off, cops outside chasing bad guys, security systems dont like open windows.. Temp jumps back up to 79C, hovers... threatening me, just waiting for me to be in an epic moment to shut down at the worst possible moment.. Boom, another shutdown..

Right now.

At this point im furious, ive called up my local computer wizard, and he wants to hold onto my PC to run temperature tests, i say hell nah, cant miss Beta, so i search Google, entering phrase after phrase of keywords, ending up finding nothing but old threads that are so close to my problem that i can almost feel the solution, but its just out of reach..

Ive tried all the basic solutions, everything from closing background programs to reduce load on the CPU, to lowering graphics, nothing gets the temperature down other than AC, and i would not like to have to run that all day every day.

I tried looking into the BIOS to set the shutoff to 90, instead of 80, but there is no option, though ive read countless threads stating otherwise, none of them telling how...

Im looking into watercooling, but i dont have the money to send my computer in right now.

So now, after all the crap that i typed, im ready to ask you guys for help.

(PS, I just signed up to the site, im sorry if this is posted wrong or anything, im not new to forums but i am new to this one, and the "Post new thread" page is really awkward..)

is your cpu overclocked are u using the stock cooler ???amd stock coolers are very average quality wise and cant handle heat well at loads with high temps....so if u are using a stock cooler i would suggest u to buy an aftermarket cooler like CM hyper 212 evo (30$)...

The CPU is not overclocked, and im using a CoolerMaster fan with a huge heat sink on it.

Its been around 8 months since i last applied fresh Thermal Paste, so i know that is something i need to do.

Awesome, thanks. Is there anything else i can do to help until i get watercooling? Short from reapplying thermal paste and sticking a fan next to my open case, im out of options.

My main concern is why its shutting down at 80C, thats 10C early from the 90C threshold.

yea its really high 80c should be the max temps for the fx 8350 and safe is 60 - 65 under load.....Intel processors can handle more heat than amd....
see if the fans are spinning on the heatsink and i think the thermal paste applied has dried out or not applied correctly..

Just checked, all fans are working, CPU Fan is at 2100RPM, the rest arent plugged into the monitor so i dont have control over them.

I just got back from the computer shop, new Thermal Paste, fans cleaned, heat sink cleaned, the works. Ran a few stress tests and used a laser reader to test the true temp, didnt even go above 60c.

Everything looks good, i come home, set everything back up, and run the tests again, hit 72c within 30 minutes..

What?
