So I was playing Garry's mod today with a couple of my friends. My computer froze and started buzzing. This happened a few days ago and got me thinking, could it be the temps or could it be the drivers, so I looked it up to find out. My temps were fine and I saw that I should run Prime95 i did and I was shocked. So I was wondering is it normal for a i7-6700K to reach 100cwhile running prime95? I have a 212 EVO cooler. But while playing Garry's mod it was low temps so I am confused as to why the game crashed, there is no way it was my CPU, temps were to low, and I don't know what else. All I am wondering is if 100c is normal on prime95, and why does my pc freeze and buzz. Just built this pc, and honestly, I'm kind of worried about it. Thank you in advance!

billiingtons11,

Do NOT run any versions of Prime95 later than 26.6. Here's why:

Core i 2nd through 6th Generation CPU's have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) instruction sets. Recent versions of Prime95, such as 28.9, run AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces unrealistically high temperatures. The FPU test in the utility AIDA64 shows similar results.

Prime95 v26.6 produces temperatures on 3rd through 6th Generation processors more consistent with 2nd Generation, which also have AVX instructions, but do not suffer from thermal extremes due to having a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader and a significantly larger Die.

Well i decided to check it out and the screws were pretty loose so I tightened them and ran it. Small change so i added a second fan. Ran aida64 for 15 minutes and it said 60c. But hardware monitor was jumping all over the place so i just went with what aida64 said. If the jumping around means anything tell me cause i would like to know how to fix thank you!!!

Well that is what I used and it was very jumpy. The max was 81c and the min was 22c. Adia64 said that my temps were 60c. I also added another fan to my cpu cooler.

Run only Small FFT’s for 10 minutes.

Use Core Temp to measure your temperatures - http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp

Your Core temperatures will test 10 to 20C lower with v26.6 than with v28.9.
