CPU Temps Get Hot REALLY FAST When Playing Games For a Few Minutes!

Whenever I play a game my CPU temps get really really hot super fast for some reason.. 80c hot!

The highest I've seen it go is 80 and I was only playing a game for about 10 minutes!

Can anyone tell me why?

P.S. I've got a few fans in my PC as well as a stock CPU fan. I don't overclock..
I use CPUID monitor to check my temps.

Hyper 212 EVO is popular and a good performer, though is probably the most used aftermarket HSF out there, which, IMO, makes it boring as heck. If you don't mind boring, go for it, if you want to branch out a little, there are lots of similarly priced coolers that offer competitive cooling vs decibel performance. The SilverStone AR01, Zalman CNPS10X performa, Arctic cooling i30, all fantastic alternative options.

And would you recommend the cooler master thermal paste I get with the cooler or to buy seperately?
+ Are you positive my CPU isn't faulty?

What case are you using? This could just be due to poor airflow and you could add some vent holes and a fan...

I've used the included paste before with no problems at all and I also bought AS5 because its very recommended but it didn't change my temps drastically, so unless you feel like splurging, I say just use the included paste.

I'm pretty sure you case is cooling well. And there is nothing normal about running 80c. Even with the stock fan that temp is too high. All my rigs are OC'd and all have Closed loop liquid coolers. If this was my situation, I'd get a Thermaltake Thermaltake CLW0217 Water 2.0 Extreme/All-In-One Liquid Cooling System, if you can find one or a Cooler Master Nepton 280L – All-In-One CPU Liquid Water Cooling System with 280mm Radiator and 2 JetFlo Fans ($99). Make sure you can mount in your case before you buy. This plus a total remount should have you running cooler even in you hotter than normal ambient. Double check that your fan connector is on the header that the manufacturer recommends.

Ideally temp wouldn't go above 85C, but some CPUs can tolerate up to 100C for a few hours. Intel CPUs WILL speed limit themselves to stop overheating.

My CPUID v1.70 doesn't do temps. Do you mean HWMonitor?

I use CoreTemp, it has a temp alarm

Sometimes airflow around the CPU is inadequate. Are all of the fans blowing in the right direction?
What happens if you leave the top off the computer? Do the temps go down by say 5C?

This is one of those obvious yet, necessary questions. Most of us know to remove the plastic cover, but maybe it wasn't removed from this install.

There is no reason for the CPU to get up to 80C. Even under max load for several hours thats way too high.

definitely worth looking into. I think a total reinstall from the MB bracket up would reveal the problem. Even a hard dry chunk of T-paste could be the culprit.

One suggestion to see how far you max temp would go:
If you have control over the fan operation, manually crank them up full, then watch and see what the temp rise does.

Ambient refers to room temp. What is your room temp.

I have answered this same question a few times now. There is nothing wrong with your cpu or airflow in your case. Devil's canyon i7's run HOT and the heatsink that intel supplys is insufficient. Get yourself an after market one like a hyper 212 evo if ur running stock or an aio liquid cooler if u plan to overclock. I used the stock cooler until the aio I wanted was in stock at my local store. It would actually hit 92 celcius in my machine and throttle. My case is a corsair 760t with lots of airflow.

This answer in particular got my interest! Is there plastic covers on the cpu's stock thermal paste? I had absolutely no idea of this! I just too it out of the box,installed the CPU,and slapped the cooler on and tightened it! 😱

Yes there is, but in my experience the plastic cover just falls off with the slightest movement and I don't see how the HS could be installed with it on, but it is possible...

Good choice. I saw 10-15C drops in temps at both idle and max load when I went from stock cooler to this on my phenom rig. I don't regret my purchase for a second. Make sure you mount it so the fan is vertical and not horizontal or it will start rattling. I had this problem and decided to rotate it and now it's perfect.

Very, very happy to hear that Shark... nothing better than having the cpu run at those temps...peace of mind at last... as I said, I went through the same thing and it definitely played with my head until I got it sorted.
