Cpu Temps to high

Hi, i have an h80i with corsair sp120 quiet edition in pp. When i got it i had some trouble installing it and i ended up with way to high temps like 70C on idle. So i ordered new thermal paste (Arctic silver 5) and when i installed it i saw that the termalpaste used before had terrible contact so i was happy and thought "this is going to fix it" so after i cleaned and installed the new thermal paste and turned on the computer, i ran prime95 and core temp and my temps reached 96C on a 4.2 ghz overclock with 1.28v. On a 3570k. Alot of people with heat issue says to remove the IHS is this smart?

Corsair h80i
Phantom 410 (1inntake, 1roof exhaust, 1 bottom inntake)

Sounds like its not installed properly and not making good contact with the cpu.

bro...just go to bios and adjust the fan speed to maximum...That may solve the problem...good luck...

it does sound like a bad contact...

i would try re-applying it. perhaps you are using to much (or to little) thermal paste

Make sure the radiator isn't plugged w/ any packaging material

yeah its definitely not installed correctly or your pumps not running or something

tighten the block down in an x pattern

ie--screw 1 then screw 3 then 2 then 4

and put your finger on the pump to see if you feel vibration

You need to be sure the pump is doing it's job and circulating the water, and you also need to be careful you don't fatigue the hoses from your temperatures becoming too high.

Have you ever opened the cooling loop? If you have, perhaps the coolant has become contaminated. You don't want stuff growing in there, or you'll clog the block and perhaps the radiator too.

Removing the IHS is not the solution, and you can destroy your processor if you're not careful.

I'd be tempted to go through and check the installation thoroughly, it would only take something to be slightly off. I don't know what the internal temperatures are like but you could also try reversing the airflow, drawing the colder outside air over the radiator into the case (the radiator is the cooling point).

its a sealed loop so doubt they ever opened it

reversing the fans wont solve temps that high--makes a few degrees difference

i have an h80 on a 2600k at 5ghz and my temps arent even in the same ballpark as those

I havent tinkered with anything but is it possible is just got a bad chip wich produces an insane amount of heat? or my h80i just sucks?.

I reinstalled and my temps are just a little bit lower like 90C on the hottest core with prime for 1minute.

Is the pump running?
Is the radiator warm?

Here's another thought... How are you measuring your temperatures? i5 chips are not supposed to even be running that hot, at all. Are you coming back with errors when you run Prime 95? Have you hopped into BIOS to see what it's reporting the temperature to be?

Radiator is warm, pump is running and i use CoreTemp to measure my temps, no errors from prime.

Although not suppose to run that hot, they can tolerate it. They shouldn't cause errors at that temp for sure.

I see that you're overclocking and your voltage is 1.28, and while others seem to be happily putting more voltage to their 3570k's, you might have one that didn't bin as well. How did you come to the determination you needed 1.28 volts, or that you're even running at that voltage?

My motherboard has an auto voltage feature that raises the voltage as the cpy needs more

I notice my pump makes a sort of peeping noise avery 2minitues or so can this be sign of faulty hardware causing the high temps?

it shouldnt "peep"

auto voltage usually gives more voltage than needed

for 4.2ghz you probably need less than 1.2v

though still shouldnt be 96c at 1.28v

If the CPU is not overclocking well, yes, it may very well be normal for that chip to be so high at 4.2 GHz and 1.28 volts.

If you could step the voltage down slightly, I would do so. Voltage is likely your biggest factor in the heat you're producing.

well i tightend my h80i a bit more and cleared my cmos so my cpu runs at stock now and im getting like 50C full load wich is pretty normal so i think the problem was my voltage.

Glad to hear you're on the right track!

If you're set on overclocking, I would just try to find how high you can go for a temperature you feel comfortable at.
