CPU Thermal Paste?

So I just put together my PC and I just realized that I forgot to put the thermal paste, that I got with my cooler, on the CPU. Is it completely necessary to put the thermal paste on?

I have an intel i5 4690k and Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

Haha, I love how everyone is freaking out, but I'm using the one I built right now, I haven't even turned it on yet cause I'm waiting for my graphics card. But thanks for everyone being so urgent, I will put the paste on now.

YES! You'll fry your CPU without it.

The stock cooler comes with pre applied thermal paste, but the 212 EVO does not.

Yeah, you might want to shut off your PC now. But boy would I love to see what kind of temps you are getting at the moment.
