Greetings,

I'd like to upgrade my old i5-3470 3.2/3.6 ghz CPU since it can't handle Battlefield 5 ( at least not in conquest). The PC will be mainly used for gaming & coding, no video rendering or streaming.
The graphics card is a GTX 1050 TI 4GB, i guess I'll keep it for another year before upgrading.
The CPU should be overclockable to lengthen its lifespan.

After reading a lot about the different CPUs available and looking at benchmarks I think that's a reasonable setup :

i7 8700k 400€
ASRock Z370 Pro4 100€
16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3000 115€

Am I paying too much for the performance gained? I do prefer Intel over AMD, so I will be overpaying no matter what.

There are several possible CPU upgrades without changing the motherboard. The I5 3570K and I7 3770K would be my choices.

After that you would need a platform upgrade as you mentioned.

The choice of Intel or AMD is up to you (AMD will be cheaper but it will have a significantly lower operating and boost frequency in GHz). The AMD CPU would have more cores for non-gaming applications.

The I7-8700K would be a great choice. The R7 2700X and motherboard would be your closest option on the AMD side. Choose an X470 like the one lined below.

MSI X470 GAMING PRO AM4 AMD X470 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

And choose the RAM from the motherboards QVL List to avoid RAM problems and upgrade the BIOS on installation.

Thank you for your tip. It looks really good compared to the i7 8700k and is actually 140€ cheaper.
