Right now I have an i7 7700k and I am wondering if now is a good time to upgrade to a newer cpu. If I do I've been looking at either i7 11700k (£300) or an i9 10850k (£350), which one would be a better choice? I plan to use it for gaming and potentially streaming/video editing

If you're a content creator(and they bring food to the table, as well as pay for the roof over your head), I'd opt for the i7 as the saying goes, time is money. The less time you spend editing/rendering your work, the more easy it is to generate that income. As for your potential processor/platform upgrade, mind sharing the games and app's you'd like to work with as well as the streaming platforms?

I'd opt out of the i9 since it's from an older generation. Yu posted this thread in the motherboard's section yet the question is geared towards a CPU choice...have you looked into a motherboard yet?

Oh, I wrote the post on mobile I must have clicked the motherboard section by mistake. I havent used this forum much. Streaming would be an experiment because I dont expect it to go well but I play all kinds of games. I have been looking at the asus prime z590 - A which costs roughly £200

Sorry for the post in the wrong section

Recently, I have seen a number of posts looking to upgrade from a i7-7700K.
How is your budget situation?
At £300 I would look at the i5-12600K.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-i5-1...&qid=1641655116&sprefix=12600k,aps,191&sr=8-1
Gaming depends mostly on the performance of the single master thread.
Here is a review of the i5-12600K:
https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/core_i5_12600k_processor_review,21.html
11th gen brought an increase in performance per clock of perhaps 19% over 1oth gen.
12th gen had a similar bump over 11th gen.
Run CPU-Z bench on your 7700K and look at the single thread performance.
You should see about 543:
http://valid.x86.fr/bench/k4gzh7
12600K will score 773.

You will need a lga1700 motherboard.
I use this msi Z690-A DDR4 with wifi
https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-PRO-Z6...41655685&sprefix=z690+msi+wifi,aps,175&sr=8-4

DDR4 today performs on a par with DDR5.
And, DDR4 motherboards and ram are more available and cheaper.

I can get an i7 11700k for 300 right now, so Im thinking of going with that. Is there any reason to go 12th gen over the 11th? As for the motherboard I will have a look at the msi board If I do choose 12th. Thanks for the reply!

11700K scores 667 on cpu-Z single thread performance.
12600K scores 773.
From what ive seen from some benchmarks the 11th gen performs better in some cases and matches in others but ofcourse thats just in games and will vary from game to game. I might spend an extra 75 to get an i7 12th gen, Do you think its worth it? Sorry for all the questions

Worth it to me?? definitely.
For you, IDK. My experience with these decisions is that the pain of a higher price lasts much shorter than the second guessing after buying the lesser product.

Thats a really good point. Thanks for all your help I just wanted to ask One more thing. The msi mobo you have, does it have 3 pin argb fan connectors and how many? or is it just 4 pin rgb
