Hi, I've been wondering if it is possible to simply replace my CPU with a more powerful one?

My current CPU is the 'AMD FX6300 black' and I wanted to upgrade to the 'FX8350'

The socket is the same for both (AM3+) and my motherboard can take both chips.

So my question is: is this upgrade simple and easy? Can I just pull out the old and put in the new? And will this change cause problems with my pc/system?

Thanks!

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Just because your motherboard has an AM3+ socket does not mean you can just slap in an octacore. FX octacores are very power-hungry, and if the motherboard is not up to the task, you'll just throttle down all day, and your system will come to a grinding halt. Also, if your power supply is not up to the task, I wouldn't bet on your system lasting very long. FX CPU's in general were very temperamental things, not to mention that they were obsolete even before they were...

If anything, please list your full system specs so we know what you have to work with.

My recommendation to you would be to make the switch to AM4 (Ryzen) or wait until the inevitable price war begins between intel and AMD (soonish) when CoffeeLake arrives.

It's easy.

The recommended motherboards for the FX 8xxx are: http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/chipsets/9-series
.
The replacement will boost your performance.

Personally would not put any more money in the outdated FM3+ platform, the FX8350 isn't a big leap. That graph above is the best case scenario using DX12 which helps using with the extra 2 threads and is a Titan X @ 1080p so is a big cpu bottleneck.

Also you haven't told us the motherboard, there are plenty that claim to support 125w CPU's but actually struggle and throttle the cpu.

I'd save for a modern platform upgrade.

FX series was decent for its time but I wouldn't upgrade to anything in the FX series to another FX series chip. It just not worth it.

I'd move over to Ryzen, however that would require a whole new board and memory etc...

You are better off saving your money and doing a real upgrade.

AM3+ not FM3, 😛.

As a guy that had an FX6350, I would say do not upgrade that AM3+. Mine was running at an OC of 4.3 for years and was adequate for what I was using it for. I went with an R5 1600x a few months ago and am very happy with it. Save your money, buy into a 1600/1600x when you're ready. There is nothing to gain in the FX-line by upgrading, other than regret.

Well at least 1 person read my post, just checking 😀

We read your post... and clearly made the recommendation that upgrading to another FX chip wouldn't be worth it. Especially since FX chips are now dying out...

If you dont want to spend the money on getting a new board, cpu and memory. Then by all means upgrade to the new CPU. It is a simple swap. Just don't except long life usage out of the device in terms of heavy loaded applications or gaming, you will be itching to upgrade from that new chip way sooner then you expect...

So in short, yes its a simple swap. Long story, dont waste your money on it.
