Hello everyone,

I am looking to upgrade my CPU on my Alienware x51 r2.

The components that are already in the computer are:

16GB of DDR3 RAM
Intel i5-4460 cpu
GTX 1060 graphics card
Dell PGRP5 Alienware X51 R2 LGA 1150 Mini-ITX Motherboard (I think, its the basic one that comes with the Alienware x51 r2)

I also have a 600W power supply.

I do not know what motherboard I would need if I were to get a new CPU as the Alienware one my pc has is quite old. I have a few questions that I need answered.

Can I transfer all of my parts to another case and get a new motherboard?
Will that new motherboard support my parts?
Will I need an extra fan?
Are the parts that came with my computer at the start made only for Alienware motherboards? (RAM,CPU)

Please help, I am a PC part noob. :(

If you get a new motherboard for a new CPU you'd likely be needing new DDR4 RAM also. With that in mind, you could simply get an i7-4790 on the used market for a decent price and it should be all you need with your GTX 1060.

Also, if you upgraded your motherboard you would no longer be able to use your version of Windows because Dell typically ties the OS to the motherboard.

I would ask Dell if your system is compatible with the i7-4790.
