This computer was completely forgotten about and I am definitely interested in building this up. It currently has an AMD Athlon II X4 645, Any recommendations on an upgrade from this CPU?

I already know I need to put this in a bigger case because the one it's in is tiny, going to build this one up until I can afford to build what I really want.

The Phenom II X4 is a newer model then the Phenom X4 (The Phenom II line being the successor to the Phenom line and all), so I would recommend that one. I've used the Pheonom II x4 in the past and it is a good processor. If you are going to go with a Phenom II x4, I would recommend a Black Edition as OC'ing is much easier and less risky with the Black Editions.
That processor is socket AM3. Socket AM3+ can use AMD FX series processors, but I don't think AM3 can. As such, most likely, your best bet is going to be an AMD Phenom II x6, which is what I am currently running (and having issues with cause it is aging). As far as I can tell, you can only get this processor series used any more, as it is no longer manufactured. When I looked on Amazon, I couldn't find any new. The Phenom II x6 are 6-core processors. You will want to check your motherboard model, and make sure what ever model number of Phenom II x6 you look at will work with your motherboard. On Amazon, I saw them going used for as low as $106 or so.

Also, make sure your power supply can handle any upgrades. If it can't, you may end up needing to upgrade the power supply as well.

Yeah, the current power supply is pretty limited in power, it's only 220 watts, which is in no way sufficient for my needs, which is why I plan to transplant the mobo and drives to a larger case with a standard sized power supply, maybe 550 or 650, not sure.

As far as the processor is concerned, I did find the Phenom X4 CPU, the AMD Phenom II X4 965, for quite a bit cheaper than the 6 core part, which is what I will probably do, with the new CPU I would get the added benefit of L3 cache.

Other than that, I haven't found any information what is specifically compatible, I figure any AM3 processor will work, not AM3+.
