I want to upgrade the cpu in my old 2006 Dell Optiplex 745. I don't want to have to upgrade my power supply it is a 305W Dell l305p-01. I want to put in a Core 2 Duo will any of these work with my Dell 0RF703 motherboard without needing a new power supply. I am also planning on putting in 4-8gb of ram.

Also would any of these pentiums or celerons be an upgrade from what i have:

Do you need to swap out a power supply for a CPU upgrade? No here is why.

Pentium D Presler 945 TDP 95 W

Best Chip you can use

Core 2 Duo E6700 2.6ghz 65 W
Pentium® 4 Processor supporting HT Technology 2.80 GHz 69.7 W

Hope you find this helpful going to a Duo or a Pentium with HT will use less Watts.

Thanks for the help. So no core 2 quads or anything like that. Why is that if you don't mind explaining it, I've been looking all over and I never find an answer to why this board says it supports lga775 but wont support all of the lga775 cpus i know this socket has been around a long time but i thought if the cpu supports it should work. Also since it supports the E6700 does that mean it will support E6600, E6500, E6400, E6300, etc...

Also if I shopped around and found some deals would it be worth it throwing in a 64 - 128gb ssd, maxing out the ram to 8gb, and puting in a graphics card if i could manage to do it all for 75 - 100 bucks. I dont want to buy a new pc i already have a new one, i just figured i'd put this old one to good use and have some fun with it. all im asking for is to watch youtube in hd, and to not have it freeze when i have 20+ tabs open.

To run a Core 2 Quad you need a FSB up to 1333 which your Chipset does not support, so your limited to Core to Duo and Pentiums.

You will need to update the Bios to support the E6700 which is the only on of the E6XXX worth upgrading to and @ $12 why look lower.

I would advise updating your RAM to DDR2 800... all of it and going with 6-8 gigs. The latest BIOS update will allow you to use SSD's without issues as well. With a 300 Watt Power supply you have to watch what GPU's you can use, here is a list of decent ones and prices.

Your 305 Watt Slim line Power supply has a 18A across the 12V rail so these would work
GT 730, R5 230, $40-$60

750TI will probably not work as it asks for 20A

Thanks a lot for the help i'm now considering selling this for $50 - $80 on ebay, my Gateway E-4300 SFF for $50 - $80, and my old garage sale hp NX9010 laptop for $30 - $50. and I could combine that money with 125 bucks i have saved. For around 300 bucks I could build a much better AMD pc than this old intel.

Delaro, you need atleast a 1066Mhz FSB to run the 65nm core 2 quads.

Apparently, people with the optiplex 745 have run core 2 quad q6600 so that might be worth it just make sure you have the latest BIOS revisions.

But no 45nm core 2 based CPUs will work.

You may be right as long as he has the right Mainboard, that PC came out with two boards from separate suppliers and the one that might work was produced far less than the one that won't.
