CPU Upgrade from AMD 6000+

Hello all, I am currently running an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ / 3 GHz processor which is a good processor but overheats like crazy when I play Cod 5: World at War.
Now my theory is (could be wrong) that its 125 in wattage which is pretty high compare to the 95W of most quad cores these days. if anyone could advise me on a Gaming CPU that doesn't overheat with a budget of £100 and under... Thanks and happy Easter

Your motherboard supports all modern desktop processors from AMD up to 125W. Your best bang for buck gaming is the 3-core Athlon IIx3 440 clocked at 3.0GHz. It is currently about $85. Your budget translates to about $150 though. If you could find a Phenom IIx4 945, 955 or 965 for that price, they would be a good deal. But really, even the 440 would very much outperform the old 6000+. I think your 6000+ is about on par with the Athlon IIx2 240 at 2.8GHz.

That being said, the processor being 125W is not your issue. AMDs stock heatsinks are designed to dissipate the heat generated by its processors. If you would like, we could troubleshoot your current problem instead. We'd just need:
-Current core temperatures on idle and load
-Did you try reseating the heatsink and applying new thermal compound?
-is the case free of dust and have good airflow?

In terms of the CPU i'm just looking for anything that matches the speed of the one I have now or better as long as it improves in cooling.

Ive had this overheating problem for so long now I even went as far as changing my graphics card from a 4870 to a 5770 with limited change.
My CPU idles around 32 and sometimes goes as low as 26 degrees. At full load when gaming it usually hits 55 degrees and on a bad day will hit to about 63 and sometimes overheat giving me the alarm signal in dual core center prompting me to restart.
I've tried replacing the stock cooler to a Zalman CNPS9500A LED. I've reseated it a good 6 times in the past using Arctic silver compound.
I have a total of 3 fans in my case; 1 at the rear end of the case and at the front which are both 120 mm, and one on the side which is I think is 80 mm.
