Hello all,

Right now I am considering upgrading my Core i7-3820 to an eight core Xeon chip.I noticed there was some seemingly good deals on newegg for CPU upgrades for my motherboard. I like to do a lot of parallel processing, animation rendering (3ds max), and gaming. Note: I do not plan on upgrading my mother board. The reason I am looking at these CPUs is because they appear to be a low priced upgrade and apparently compatible with my mobo.

Here are my questions:

  • Would any of the following processors be worth upgrading to for the price?

Would I see a significant drop in gaming performance?

I have heard that Intel Xeon processors can be somewhat difficult to overclock. Is this true?

Has anyone tried purchasing from one of Newegg's thrid party vendors?

Are the following processors I linked to truly compatible? Does it matter if it is HP branded?

Processors I am looking at (That are compatible with my mobo):
E5-2680 Sandy Bridge -EP: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA75M3GE8171 $189.95

E5-2670 Sandy Bridge -EP:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAAW54T7037 $194.50

E5-2650 Sandy Bridge -EP:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4M54R44548 $125.29

Here is my current System:
CPU: Core i7-3820
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Mobo: Gigabyte X79-UD5
Ram: 16GB 1600 DDR3
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
HDD: 4TB Black Edition Western Digital Hard drive
Case: Cooler Master HAF X
GPU: 3x GTX 570 (switching out soon to maybe a GTX 1080)
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2

Thanks for your thoughts!

Would any of the following processors be worth upgrading to for the price?

YES, its cheap upgrade. But I think I have a website that offer cheaper than what you have. Please check it yourself, but do it at your own risk. It sold used E5-2650 as per your link says for US$58.

I would definitely check it out if I live in United states.

Would I see a significant drop in gaming performance?

No, only on old games that do not support multithreading. Then again those old game would be killed by sandy bridge architecture. On new games such as battlefield 1, you will see that your cpu will work much less burdened than your current one. Your current one is...

Mine cannot get overclocked as its not a retail model.

Sorry, never. Since I live in asia. I bought from newegg trough my relatives.

Yes, you chosen LGA 2011 which is what your motherboard supported.
