I built my system in 2014. I love it but not the beast I really wanted.
I've done a ton of reading and I'm playing with the Idea of finding two i7 3970X processors to put on my Xeon ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS MOBO

-Everything I've read says the two will not only fit but work together
-Both LGA 2011 originals versions
-The i7 is unlocked to allow overclocking
-The Z9PE-D8-WS allows for base clock and multiplier overclocking.

Am I missing anything?
-----------------------------

System:
BIOS: 5304
MotherBoard: ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS Dual LGA 2011
2X Processors E5 2630 2.6 Intel Xeon
Corsair 1600 DDR RAM 4 x 8 Total 32 GB
980 GTX Nvidia GPU
PSU 1200W RT Corsair
2X Samsung 520 GB SSD

Yep that would be the missing component. Didn't realize the link was through the CPU's and not the motherboard..
That's very disappointing. I wanted the multiplier unlocked for the CPU. Is there any XEON that has an unlocked multiplier?

This site and others aswell as You Tube (Linus Tech Tips) confirmed that the processors were nearly the same except for ECC and over clocking support. Thus they would work int he same sockets. They didn't say they about in a dual Socket set up.
